High Blood Pressure, It Could Be All In The Eyes?

High Blood Pressure, it could be all in the eyes? by stephenmorganIn this article we’re going to take a look at one of the slightly unexpected ways that you can be diagnosed with High Blood Pressure, what it can do to you if you ignore it and one of the things that you can do about it?Well why don’t we kick off with the cheerful bit first? Basically if left untreated and ignored it will kill you? How about that for starters?OK Steve”, I hear you cry, hit me with the cheerful stuff and don’t hold anything back!”High blood Pressure is difficult to spot in the traditional sense of things and the warning signs are very difficult if nigh on impossible for the lay person to identify. You can be diagnosed in number of ways and you would be surprised how and when you can pick up a diagnosis of High Blood Pressure. This is not meant to act as an attempt to instil wholesale panic amongst folks. Take yesterday afternoon for example. I had a routine examination at my opticians for a repeat prescription and to check out my eyes for reading glasses. It was the usual drill for someone in their forties. Basically as a friend of mine had cheerfully pointed out a few years back it wasn’t a case of my eyes being faulty it was more of a case of my arms not being long enough when I wanted to be able to read a book comfortably! So, back to the Opticians. There I was resting my chin on the support for this new fangled piece of technology that they now use to check out your eyes and going through the initial process when the Optician turned to me and said OK now I am gong to shoot a few jets of some gasses into your eyes”.OK” I thought, here goes, this should be interesting.”Anyway a few puffs of gas later a very painless experience I must add and the Optician turned to me and said Did you know you have slightly raised Blood Pressure? How long have you been suffering from it and when was the last time you saw your Doctor?”Ah, should have told you about that before” I said, Yes I do suffer from High Blood Pressure and this is the medication I am on.” I proceeded to go through my prescription and she, very professionally took down copious notes. Does this sort of thing happen often?” You would be surprised by how often it does” came the reply. When we do our first check on anew patient (or one that hasn’t been to us for some time), the first thing we do is check the blood pressure in the eyes. Left untreated it can eventually lead to blindness. Quite often people don’t realise that a visit to their optician can be the first line in the defence against High Blood Pressure as a condition”Now I see” I thought (pardon the pun) two reasons to go and have your eyes checked regularly. Even if you think you have 20/20 vision (and especially if you work with Computer screens and Monitors on a daily basis). An eye examination can pick up treatable conditions and deal with them as well as providing an opportunity to spot subtle changes that can be the forerunners of much more dangerous conditions such as High Blood Pressure.Stephen Morgan is Senior Editor forLiving with High Blood Pressure and also its sister site Living with Stress. Controversy over Liverpool fan jailed in Bulgaria

Controversy over Liverpool fan jailed in Bulgaria

Friday, July 29, 2005

Michael Shields, an 18-year old Liverpool Football Club supporter, has been jailed for the attempted murder of a Bulgarian barman, despite another man from Liverpool admitting full responsibility.

Shields, 18 from Wavertree was charged with the attempted murder of Martin Georgiev, 25, after being accused of throwing a brick at the barman’s head in the city of Varna, where he was celebrating Liverpool football club’s win over AC Milan in the final of the Champions League in Istanbul in May.

Before being charged, a 20 year old man from Anfield came forward and claimed responsibility for the attack – Graham Sankey, made a statement through his lawyer David Kirwan.

Mr Kirwan said: “Graham believed the case against Michael would either be thrown or adjourned after he came forward to make his confession.” Despite the confession, Shields was convicted of attempted murder.

Shields’ uncle, Joey Graney, was in court when the sentence was passed and said: “Michael was sobbing. He’s an 18-year-old lad, quiet as a mouse, on his own, going back to a Bulgarian jail. What’s he going to do? As far as the Bulgarians were concerned, a local lad had been attacked and they wanted their scapegoat. They did not care that Graham Sankey has confessed to carrying out the attack. They just tossed that aside.”

The family have said they will do everything in their power to clear Michael’s name. Meanwhile, Liverpool Riverside MP Louise Ellman, has backed the family’s campaign calling the incident a “travesty of justice”.

“Graham Sankey has admitted he was guilty of the crime that Michael Shields is now convicted of, but he did so in a way that was inadmissible to the Bulgarian court,” added Mrs Ellman, who is planning to speak to his defence team.

A British Foreign Office spokesman said it could not comment on the verdict but said it would continue offering consular help to Michael Shields.

Bulgarian government officials have since agreed to begin the process of releasing Michael Shields, in exchange for the arrest of Graham Sankey.

The development came after long-time justice campaigner Stephen Jakobi held closed talks with Bulgarian ambassador Lachezar Matev at the Bulgarian Embassy in London.

Mr. Jakobi announced that Michael could be free in the next “few months”.

“It’s been a good day and we have achieved an important breakthrough.

“We have got an agreement with the Bulgarian government that they are going to take up our proposed course of action – that is issuing an arrest warrant for Graham Sankey.

“The government is independent of the judiciary in that country but they can hold talks with them to get the ball rolling as soon as possible.

“The arrest warrant will means the extradition process will begin.”

Home Secretary Jack Straw has also agreed to meet with Shield’s family to discuss the situation with them.

Lead programmer of Microsoft Word, Joe Friend, wrote on his blog that the upcoming version of Microsoft Word (which will be a part of Microsoft Office 2007 suite) will have blog editing and publishing functions.

Friend said: “When I write a blog post using my blog providers web-based editor I miss some of the familiar Word features that I’ve come to rely on, specifically background spelling (those little red squiggles) and autocorrect. These features keep me from making stupid mistakes.”

Friend also said that Word 2007 will not generate unnecessary HTML code. “Bold become <strong>, Italic becomes <em>, Heading 1 become <h1>, Quotes become <blockquote> and on it goes.”

Previously, critics of Microsoft Word’s HTML generation capabilities held that the application generated unneeded and bulky HTML code.

Graphic files that users would use in blog entries will be converted to the PNG format, which includes support for alpha channel (i.e. partial) transparency.

To create new or publish post, there will be three mouse-clicks: to create File ? New… ? New Blog Post); to publish File ? Publish ? Blog.

Eight people are dead and two more are missing and presumed dead after an explosion and fire on a cargo ship undergoing repairs at a naval dockyard in Kaliningrad, Russia.

The container ship MV Yenisey was the scene of an explosion while in drydock at about 3:00 p.m. Moscow time (11:00 GMT). Ten people were missing after the explosion. It was confirmed today that the eighth body has been recovered, and the remaining two are thought to be dead as well. Three more were injured.

Captain 1st Rank Igor Dygalo, acting as a navy spokesperson, said “Each family of the victims of the fire on the Yenisey civilian vessel will be paid more than a million rubles.” This makes their compensation roughly equivalent to US$43,000.

Dygolo said that the dockyard, in the closed military town of Baltiysk, near Kaliningrad, had been leased to the Yenisey’s St Petersburg owner, a private company, who were conducting the work themselves. He said an investigation has been launched by the navy led by top admiral Vladimir Vysotsky.

Vysotski himself has indicated that serious safety legislation breaches concerning welding regulations by both the vessel’s owner and the naval dockyard’s bosses. He did not go into details, but RIA Novosti claimed that a source at the dockyard said a gas burner applied to the roof of a fuel tank to heat and therefore loosen its bolts had triggered the disaster.

Today is an official day of mourning for Kaliningrad Region to mark the deaths.

The Canberra Capitals Academy won 71–68 against the Bendigo Braves Saturday in the Round 16 South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) game at the Belconnen Basketball and Sports Centre.

From a narrow half time lead of 36–35, the Capitals managed to extend their lead to 46–37 before Bendigo pegged them back to 48–47 at three quarter time. Not far into the final quarter, the scores were tied at 55 all. With a little over two minutes left, the score was 63–66. The Capitals’ Michaela Dalgleish scored a three point shot to tie the score, but Bendigo’s Renae Camino replied with a two point basket to make it 66–68. The Capitals’ Mikaela Dombkins managed a three pointer, and was decked in the process. Sent to the free throw line, she converted one shot to make the score 70–68. With only twenty seconds left, instead of scoring, Bendigo fouled, sending the Captials’ Alyce Shearing to the free throw line. She missed both shots, giving Bendigo one last chance. Bendigo attempted a three point shot to win the game, but turned the ball over, and drew another foul that sent the Capitals’ Tessa Lavey to the free throw line. She scored one point. In the dying seconds of the game, Bendigo was unable to score, giving the Capitals a win.

With a median age of 19, the Capitals were somewhat younger than their opponents. Nonetheless, the team of Brianna Dalgleish, Michaela Dalgleish, Claire King, Abbie Davis, Tessa Lavey, Alyce Shearing, and Mikaela Dombkins conceded nothing in ball-handling skills.

US Senate panel approves healthcare reform bill

US Senate panel approves healthcare reform bill

Wednesday, October 14, 2009

The United States Senate Committee on Finance approved a proposal to reform health care on Tuesday, clearing it to move forward. The bill passed by a 14-9 vote, gaining support from the committee’s thirteen Democrats, and one Republican.

Senator Olympia Snowe was the only senator from the Republican party to back the bill. However, she said this might change as the bill moves through Congress.

There are many, many miles to go in this legislative journey

“There are many, many miles to go in this legislative journey. My vote today is my vote today. It doesn’t forecast what my vote will be tomorrow,” Snowe said.

President Barack Obama, who supports the bill as part of his effort to overhaul the country’s health care system, welcomed the committee’s vote. “We are closer than ever before to passing healthcare reform but we are not there yet. Now is not the time to pat ourselves on the back – now is the time to dig in further and get this done. In this final phase we should engage with each other with civility and seriousness that has brought us this far and that this subject deserves.”

The bill, which contains a ten-year plan with an estimated cost of US$829 billion, is aimed at lowering healthcare costs and increasing the affordability of insurance. Proponents will now seek to merge it with another bill from the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus emphasized, “Americans want us to craft a package that will get the 60 votes needed to pass.” He argued that the Finance bill was the best candidate to attract needed the centrist support.

Critics, however, have said that the proposed plan is too costly, and will cause the government to interfere too much into the private healthcare sector.

“We can now see clearly that the bill continues its march leftward,” said the senior Republican on the committee, Senator Charles Grassley. “This bill is already moving on a slippery slope to more government control of healthcare.”
