Tuesday, September 26, 2006

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

At 2 am, September 25, UTC time, the jury of Wikimania 2007 City Contest announced that Taipei has been chosen as the host city of Wikimania 2007.

“Taipei had the winning combination of a dedicated and experienced bidding team, a great venue with centralized accommodation and community areas, and strong sponsorship opportunities. Taipei also provides the opportunity to focus attention on the growing Asian language projects and the international aspect of the Wikimedia Foundation, as well as learning about other free knowledge efforts and projects in the region,” the jury said.

“This was a very difficult decision. Every one of the shortlisted bids this year were outstanding,” the jury continues. The other 3 bidding cities are Turin (Italy), Alexandria (Egypt) and London (United Kingdom).

Wikimania is a conference for users of the wiki projects operated by the Wikimedia Foundation. Researchers and speakers presented studies and experiments on Wikipedia and other projects operated by the Wikimedia Foundation, on wiki culture and technology, and on the world of free knowledge. The first conference was held in Frankfurt, Germany from August 4 to 8 in 2005; the second ran from August 4 to 6 in 2006 in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the United States. The third run will be held in Chien Tan Overseas Youth Activity Center, Taipei, Taiwan from August 3 to 5 in 2007.

byadmin

When it comes to home renovations, there are some tasks that owners can manage without any help. Other tasks require the aid of a professional. Here are some of the advantages of choosing the latter approach.

Help with Style Selection

As part of the process of Door Installation in Naperville IL, a professional can help the homeowner choose the right type of door. What functions other than being able to secure the room must the door provide? Perhaps a door that is capable of muffling sounds would be helpful. Would a Dutch door be a good way to keep the entry blocked while still allowing plenty of air flow on a cool day? Suggestions from an expert prior to purchasing the door could save a lot of money and lead to more benefits.

A Perfect Fit

Especially with older homes, the door frames may or may not be uniform in size. This means that any mass-produced door will have to be fitted before it is put in place. A professional will know how to go about altering the door so that the fit is perfect. Thanks to the careful work, the door will not stick, but it will provide an effective barrier.

The Right Hardware

Depending on the features of the door, some types of hinges and other hardware may be more appropriate than others. Rest assured that a professional will know what type of hardware is needed in order to make sure the door is mounted properly. This is important since the wrong hardware will place additional pressure on the door and the frame. That in turn increases the risk of warping and other issues.

For help with door selection and installation, contact the team at EDI Exterior Designers Inc today. After learning more about what the customer has in mind, it will be easy to recommend the right type of door for the setting, and make sure that is is a perfect fit. Thanks to the amount of care taken with the selection and the installation, the door will provide many years of efficient use.

Fishing Using Electroincs

September 18th, 2022 in Civil Excavation And Demolition Services | No Comments

Submitted by: Ted Koppel

When it comes to marine electronics for fishing, you have a wide array of choices. In addition, you can also get an iPhone software called FishHead that tracks weather, tides, and even lunar information! But for most people, fishing electronics usually brings to mind fish finders and GPS systems. They can be purchased separately, or in combo units saving mounting space and money.

There are several things that should be considered when deciding on fishing boat electronics.

When it comes to transducers on fishing electronics, there are single frequency transducers and dual frequency transducers. Single frequency transducers are used for lakes and shallow coastal fishing, while dual frequency is used for deeper water fishing. In deep water, the higher frequency transducer on a dual transducer fish finder is the one that shows you the fish.

You can also get display screens on marine electronics with many different resolutions. Indeed, higher resolution, brings better image. Color screens can be better viewed in direct sunlight. The overall size of the display may be anywhere from four to seven inches, measured on the diagonal. Generally speaking, the more power your fishing electronics come with, the better the results, even in still or shallow water. Depth penetration is related to the power and quality of the transducer. Better transducers penetrate the water best. Saltwater and muddy water will limit the depth to which your fish finder will penetrate.

Norcross makes a portable fish finder with many new marine electronics features including several sensitivity settings and a mountable and side scanable sonar sensor. To use it, you need to power it on, toss the floating sonar sensor overboard and get instant fish, depth, weed, and contour readings on the handheld monitor device. It updates depth readings four times per second for high accuracy, and you can have the information displayed in meters or feet. The LCD monitor blocks glare with Polarized VirtuView technology and SoftGlow backlighting. It has an audible fish alarm and enables accurate measures of weed height.

Eagle makes a line of inexpensive to mid-range fishing electronics that are boat mounted. Some of them have grayscale screens, and some are color. The color screens are easier to read in bright sunlight. Those fish finders start at as low as USD 100.

Humminbird is also a popular line for marine electronics. Though they, too make inexpensive fish finders, they also have some more gadgety models, too, such as a combination wristwatch / fish finder, and specialized fish finders for ice fishing.

Lowrance is considered one of the higher end providers of marine electronics, including fish finders. They include bigger screens and better resolution than the more basic brands, though they, too, have a couple of more affordable models, and one model that is specially designed for ice fishing.

Marine electronics for fishing include fish finders and other devices that combine multiple features. You can buy a fish finder for 100 dollars and you can pay several hundred, too. Your specific needs and budget will determine which type of equipment for fishing will best suit your needs.

World AIDS Day events held around the globe

World AIDS Day events held around the globe

Sunday, December 2, 2007

The 20th annual World AIDS Day was December 1, 2007. The theme selected by the World AIDS Campaign is “Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise” as it will be through 2010. The day was marked by thousands of events around the world.

“It is now time for bold leadership at all levels in order to turn the tide of HIV,” said Felicita Hikuam, Global Programmes Manager, World AIDS Campaign. An estimated 33.2 million people around the world—one in every 200—are living with HIV, and approximately 6,800 people are infected with HIV and 5,700 people die of AIDS-related illnesses every day.

“The trend is encouraging but still for every person receiving treatment four others are newly infected,” said Nelson Mandela, speaking at a concert in Johannesburg, South Africa. “If we are to stop the Aids epidemic from expanding, we need to break the cycle of new HIV infections. All of us working together with government, communities and civil society can make the difference that is needed,” he continued.

As many as 50,000 people attended the concert in Johannesburg, South Africa, which was telecast around the world. It was organized by Nelson Mandela’s 46664 AIDS campaign and featured performances by artists such as Peter Gabriel, Ludacris, Razorlight, the Goo Goo Dolls and Annie Lennox.File:20050702-Nelson Mandela Live8 Edinburgh.jpg

At a fundraiser in the town of Midrand, in the province Gauteng, near Johannesburg on Friday, singer Annie Lennox had strong words for the South African government’s AIDS policies.

“AIDS, as Madiba [Mandela] has said, is a human rights issue and should be treated as such in order to avoid this genocide that is affecting millions and millions of people around the world,” said Lennox in a speech. Lennox has previously been critical of the South African government’s position on suggesting some AIDS medications were toxic. “It is unacceptable that treatment has not been made available to those who need it most,” said Lennox.

The rock band Queen, which lost its lead singer Freddie Mercury to AIDS, released a new song entitled, Say It’s Not True, to coincide with World Aids Day. It has been made available as a free download from the band’s website. “By making the song available for free, we hope to help Nelson Mandela with his campaign to get across the message that no-one is safe from infection,” said Queen drummer Roger Taylor. “We have to be aware, we have to protect ourselves and those we love.”

In China, people distributed AIDS prevention brochures in the streets and promoted safe sex in cities like Beijing and Shanghai. In Changsha, official warning signs were put on hotel bedstands. The government announced on Friday an allocation of CNY860 million for AIDS prevention and control. According to official reports, there are estimated to be 700,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in China.

Also in China, the Miss World 2007 was in Sanya on World AIDS Day. The pageant presented a special tribute to the fight against AIDS, with a televised speech from former South African President Nelson Mandela, along with traditional dancers from South Africa who joined the contestants in a special song.

Friday, United States President George W. Bush urged the United States Congress to double the 2003 Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief to US$30 billion over the next five years. “Above all, we rededicate ourselves to a great purpose: We will turn the tide against HIV/AIDS—once and for all,” he said.

“I’m pleased to announce that Laura and I will travel to sub-Sahara Africa early next year,” Bush said. Sub-Saharan Africa suffered nearly three-quarters of AIDS-related deaths during 2006 and is home to two-thirds of those living with HIV/AIDS.

How To Detect And Prevent Air Leaks In Your Home

by

Roberto Bell

If your house has air leaks, your electric or gas bill is going to reflect it pretty quickly. So how do you detect whether you have air leaks in your home and what do you do to prevent them?

A heated house is much like a chimney in that they both hold warm air and are surrounded by cold air. In this, a house will draw air in at the bottom and expel it at the top. All winter, a heated house is trying to push air through the top-floor ceiling into the attic. But when looking for air leaks, in addition to looking in the attic, you want to examine your whole house. Air can leave the house at any point, seeping out your precious warm air and letting in cool air.So what is the rule of thumb when looking for air leaks? To start, look any place that you may have what is called penetrations or discontinuities. Discontinuities could be where different materials meet, such as between brick and wood siding, between foundation and walls, and between the chimney and siding. Penetrations are places in your home where holes have been drilled for exhaust fans, ducts, chimneys etc. Look for small holes such as those created for electrical wiring and cable installations as well. Also look for bypasses, which are major air passages from any floor into the attic. Dropped ceilings in the room below will often conceal a direct connection to the attic. Concrete-block party walls between row houses also often move house air into the attic. To look for air leaks in the attic, go up in your attic at night and see if you can see any light shining through from the floor below. If your home is older, the most thorough way to prevent air leaks in an attic floor is to seal all areas where pipes, ducts, or wiring pass through the floor. Leaks can be sealed with caulking, expanding foam, plastic, or other methods.Another common area to examine for air leaks is around windows and doors. Starting with your windows, use a waterproof caulk and a caulking gun or simple weather stripping to seal any air leaks you may detect around a window’s frame or sill. Replace older windows with ones that offer greater protection from air leaks. Windows marked with the government’s Energy Star designation are ideal for insulating your home. The durable materials used in Energy Star window frames provide greater protection against air leaks. As for your doors, seal drafts that occur around exterior doors. Exterior doors contribute greatly to the problem of air leaks. To help stop drafts you can install a doorsill, weather stripping or a door sweep. Weather stripping or foam insulation strips can be purchased at your local hardware store and is available in varying thicknesses. Choose the thickness based on factors such as how tightly your door closes. If you can look at your door during the day and see light, you may want to use a thicker strip. If your door closes tightly, choose a thinner strip. You can place the strip on the areas where you feel heat loss. Typically on a door, placing the foam insulation strip along the inside of the door jam makes for a neater appearance and less people tend to notice it.Some of the less obvious places to check for air leaks is electrical outlets and light switches. Sometimes you can place your hand over these areas and see if you can feel a breeze. It is more common to have an air leak at the exterior walls, but depending on how your home was built you may have air leaks at the interior walls as well. Electrical outlet and light switch insulators are a great place air likes to come in. Check these as well.Next, if your home has plumbing coming in directly from under the house, these areas can be left unsealed. Look under the sink for any holes around the plumbing pipes. Foam insulation can be placed around the pipe to seal small gaps. For larger gaps consider stuffing the holes with steel wool and taping over it with duct tape. This will not only seal the air leak but also prevent mice and rats from chewing through to the inside of your home. If your plumbing pipe has a cap around it, pull the cap away from the wall. If there is a hole, simply use the foam insulation strip to fill in the hole by wrapping a small strip around the pipe.If you cannot seem to figure out where your house is leaking air, an infrared scan can be used. A professional can examine your house with this heat-sensitive camera and then be able to provide you with where there is at least 10 C difference in temperature between inside and outside air.If you are on a tight budget, consider closing off rooms that you do not commonly use. Close off air vents in the room and keep the door to that room closed. Place a towel at the bottom of the outside of the door to prevent the cold air from getting to the rest of the house. This works really well and helps to save money on the heating and air bills. When you seal up your home, you will notice pretty quickly a difference in your energy bill and possibly find yourself a lot more comfortable during the harsh winter and summer months.
