Tamiflu maker on alert after bird flu deaths in Indonesia

Saturday, May 27, 2006

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Saturday asked the Swiss manufacturer of the antiviral medicine Tamiflu to prepare the global stockpile of the drug for distribution after a family of seven Indonesians died from the H5N1 avian flu virus. However, the WHO says that there is no cause for alarm at this point.

“Whenever there is a cluster, we contact Roche just to let them know that if we need to send the stockpile that they should be ready to do so,” said a spokeswoman for the WHO, Maria Cheng. However, Cheng says “we have not asked that anything be sent, and nothing from Roche has been sent.”

Jules Pieters, director of the WHO’s rapid response unit, informed Roche Holdings AG to be on alert for the next two weeks after the Indonesian health ministry informed the WHO of the deaths of the members of a family cluster in Kubu Simbelang village in North Sumatra. “We were quite keen to inform Roche quite timely, we knew Thursday would be a holiday in Europe and wanted to make sure Roche warehouses would be open,” he said.

Pieters also said that the move was part of standard procedure in cases where there is reasonable suspicion of human-to-human transmission. The WHO flew 9,500 doses of Tamiflu into Indonesia along with protective gear as a precaution.

According to the WHO, the virus has not mutated into an easily human-transmittable form, nor had it spread outside the family, who were all blood relatives in close contact.

Officials in Indonesia also reported on Friday that two more fatal cases of avian flu were reported, this time between an 18-year-old man and his 10-year-old sister. Tests on the two victims are expected to be sent to WHO laboratories for confirmation.

The WHO also says that they have “no intention of shipping that stockpile” and that they consider this “a practice run,” said spokesman for the WHO, Dick Thompson. The WHO also said that the virus has not mutated and so far has not shown any signs of human to human transmission outside the affected family members.

Roche Holding is expected to remain on high alert for at least two weeks.

Most of us love to share and receive videos online but few of us really know what goes on behind that entire interface. Behind this seemingly simple concept lies a complex and revolutionary system which uses a technology known as video over CAT5. It is very effective, is widely in use nowadays and is the reason why the world is probably a much smaller place today!

How does it work?Basically, various high definition videos can be broadcast and relayed from diverse sources ranging from DSS, cable TV, baseband camera outputs, which have been modulated, DVDs, VCRs as well as even your own laptop or PC. These videos can then be transferred to as many as a whopping 14000 outlets of the RJ-45 variety. This amazing technology is a video distribution system like no other. With the help of a special platform known as RF distribution, one can view such high definition videos across media like bulletin boards, television, video conferences, alert broadcasts for emergency situations as well as for distance learning! What goes behind such a technology? This kind of a transmission of video over CAT5 happens because of a hardware solution, which is self-adjusting in nature. What this means is that the method of distribution of video is versatile and can occur across many thousands of outlets. Compared to conventional systems of video distribution, such a method of distribution is more cost-effective. By making use of existing telecommunications wiring and cabling, the videos can be relayed in a most effective manner. Most office spaces, buildings, hospitals, hotels, classrooms and campuses already have such an infrastructure in place. Hence, the installation costs of such a system are negligible.Through basic plug and play techniques, videos can be instantly relayed across various media. There is hardly any need for design engineering for installing such a system. There is also no requirement to adjust or balance any components. Basically, two wiring pairs are taken from an existing CAT5 sheath and then used for facilitating dual-direction videos. The other remaining pairs of wiring can be later used to distribute data or telephony. Analog and digital videosThe other advantage of having such a relay system in place is that it makes use of both digital and analog videos. Thus, this automatically broadens the scope of applications across which it can be used. Considering the cost-effectiveness, ease of installation, flexibility and ability to function on multiple platforms and media, this CAT5 distribution of videos is very efficient.

Sudan accuses Chad of air strikes

Sudan accuses Chad of air strikes

Sunday, May 17, 2009

Sudan blamed Chad on Sunday of launching an air strike on its territory, a day after accusing the country of mounting two other raids.

“This morning at 10.30 local time [0.730 GMT], another visit took place on the same location and using the same method,” said Othman al-Aghbash, a spokesman for the Sudanese army.

Sudan also accused Chad earlier on Friday of launching a pair of airstrikes 60 kilometers (37 mi) into Sudanese territory. Chad promptly dismissed the accusations, claiming that Sudan was “the robber who cries thief.”

Ali Youssef Ahmed, the head of the Sudanian foreign ministry, called the Friday air strikes an “act of war”. He did not comment on whether Sudan was considering to retaliate to the alleged attacks, only saying that “we are considering all options.”

A spokesman for the Chadian government told reporters that “is surprised to learn that the regime in Khartoum is protesting against action by the Chadian air force on Sudanese territory”. A confrontation would be “simply the consequence of the attack on Chad organised by Sudan, using mercenaries armed, trained, financed and directed by satellite by the Khartoum regime”, he said.

Original Story
 • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Residents, business owners and developers attended a low profile, “private” neighborhood meeting about the Elmwood Village Hotel proposal and redesign in Buffalo, New York last night. At least 50 people from the Penhurst block, the Claremont block, the Granger block and various other locations attended. A representative from Forever Elmwood was also at the meeting. Joel Golombeck, City Councilman for the Elmwood area, was also among the attendees.

The Elmwood Village Hotel is a seven million dollar proposal by Savarino Construction Services Corp. The hotel would be built on the intersection of Elmwood and Forest Aves. in Buffalo. In order for the hotel to be built, the demolition of at least five currently occupied buildings will be required.

Golombeck found out about the proposal just three weeks ago when Sam Savarino of Savarino Construction Services Corp. called Golombeck.

Golombeck said that he was asked, by the City of Buffalo to “approve” the proposal “tomorrow”, (February 28, 2006). When asked to do so Golombeck replied, “That is just not possible. I did not realize how fast tracked this plan was. My first question to Savarino was, did you talk to the neighborhood?”

Golombeck also stated that he would not approve or deny the proposal until a reasonable amount of time was given to the community to make a judgment on the new design.

Golombeck also stated that the City of Buffalo wanted Savarino to obtain both 605 Forest and 607 Forest for the proposal, but, according to Golombeck, Savarino “does not want to do that.” In order for the two buildings to be included in the development, Savarino will have to apply for a C-2 zoning permit. It is unknown if an attempt will be made to obtain those properties or make the zoning changes.

Wendy Pierce of Forever Elmwood stated that she had found out about the proposal only “two weeks ago from today.” She also stated that the original design “felt too massive.” Pierce also stated that she wanted to “speak more with the block clubs and residents” around the area.

Ms. pierce also stated that “other options” for parking will be looked into “if possible.”

The new design will have less retail space and now has at lease three conference rooms. Parking has been increased to a total of fifty-five spaces, both underground and above.

Rocco Termini, a Buffalo developer also attended the meeting still stating that the hotel would “destroy Elmwood’s urban streetscape.” Mr. Termini has proposed a second development that would not include a hotel, but increase retail shops to at least seven.

The City of Buffalo Planning Board is still scheduled to meet at 8:00a.m Tuesday. The Common Council is still expected to meet at 2:00p.m. on the same day.

Joel Golombeck is expected to attend both meetings.

Delhi Travel Sightseeing Places In The Capital Of India

Delhi, the capital of India is the political centre and a tourist delight. Being one of the oldest cities in India, Delhi has a rich culture and history that a tourist unravels while on a quest to discover the city s heritage.

Delhi being the capital city of India is the travel hub of Northern India. It nestles two contrasting yet unanimous parts Old Delhi and New Delhi. Since it is well linked by rail, air and road to all northern parts of the country, Delhi has been a great transit for me. Delhi obviously houses all leading national and international hotel chains from across the world but what s great is that you will also find a huge choice of budget hotel. If you are looking for such budget hotels, then you must consider the areas like Paharganj, which is close to New Delhi, Railway Station between Old Delhi and New Delhi. You ll see a number of affordable hotels here. If you rather stay close to business or tourist areas find budget hotels in Karol Bagh and Connaught Place.

The most momentous spot here is the India Gate build to commemorate Indian soldiers in wars. This poised structure built from sandstone is a great place to have delicious sidewalk food and take postcard pictures. While the India Gate is representative of New Delhi that is modern and fast growing, the Red Fort a magnificent palace in the world is representative of Old Delhi. This rich red stone structure has played a crucial role in the Indian history right from the Mughal rule to today where the Prime Minister of India addresses the country every year on the 15th of August.

There is a similar strong connect with the present and past in another vital structure which is the Rashtrapati Bhavan. This former lodge for the Viceroy during the British rule is now the official residence of the Prime Minister. A 340 room palace, located in a beautifully landscaped area of 130 hectares is the biggest residence of any Head of State. Every February, the Rashtrapati Bhavan is open to showcase of numerous types of flowers at the Mughal Garden. Other heritage spots at Delhi include the Qutab Minar. It is not just the world s tallest minaret but is also one of the finest monuments across the world. The diameter of the base is 14.3 meters while 379 steps above, the top floor measures 2.75 meters in diameter. The Moghul rule has left behind a number of other beautiful structures like Purana Quila, Jama Masjid, Humayun s Tomb, Safdarjung s Tomb etc.

Delhi has also witnessed great art outside of the Mughal rule like the Jantar Mantar which is one of the first attempts at creating an observatory for complex astronomical calculations. This Jantar Mantar is one of the five built around north India by Maharaja Jaisingh II of Jaipur. The flowerlike shaped Lotus Temple is a Bah ‘ House of Worship is also a prominent attraction here. Since its inauguration in 1986, this place has attracted over 50 million (2002) visitors, making it one of the most visited buildings in the world. Today Delhi being a major cultural, political, and commercial center of India is a must visit destination in India.

The trial of Saddam Hussein

On November 5, 2006, former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was found guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death by hanging.

The charges relate to the reprisal killings of 148 people, following a failed assassination attempt on Saddam Hussein in 1982 in the town of Dujail.

The year-long trial saw witnesses, including a former Iraqi intelligence officer who investigated the assassination attempt, testify of imprisonment, torture and the execution of 148 villagers. Documents and a recording of a telephone conversation were presented linking Saddam with the executions. Defense lawyers questioned the validity of the court, disputed the prosecution’s account of the events and claimed that the executions were legal.

The trial saw frequent outbursts from the defendants and clashes between defense attorneys and judges. Three members of the defense team were murdered during the course of the trial, and the defense accused prosecutors of attempting to bribe witnesses. The chief judge of the court resigned in January over differences with Iraqi authorities over the conduct of the trial.

Gunman shoots doctor, then kills mother and self at Maryland hospital
October 5th, 2018 in Uncategorized | No Comments

Thursday, September 16, 2010

A man shot a faculty physician as well as his own mother before killing himself at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. The shooting occurred on the eighth floor of the Nelson Building, the hospital’s main building. Baltimore police found the suspected shooter, who had been barricaded inside his mother’s hospital room for several hours before killing himself and his mother.

At around 11:15 a.m. EDT (1515 UTC), an unnamed doctor was shot in the chest at a patient area of the Nelson Building’s thoracic center. All major hospital facilities were placed under a lockdown, and some medical personnel were evacuated from the Nelson Building. The doctor was sent to surgery at the hospital, and police spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said that the doctor will likely survive the incident. He was not aware of any connections between the suspect and the doctor, who was in critical condition.

A nurse at the hospital told The Baltimore Sun that the shooter was dissatisfied with how his mother had been treated and even said that he was going to jump out of a window. The nurse said that, upon hearing gunshots, she ran.

Earlier, Baltimore area police said that they were “in the process of a tactical operation” to capture the gunman, who was holed up on the eighth floor. A spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said that it had been assisting local police in the incident. A Johns Hopkins spokesperson had previously said that authorities had taken the shooter into custody, but police said that the report was incorrect.

The suspect, who had not taken any hostages, was described as a black man in his thirties. After a standoff lasting for three hours, law enforcement officers moved into his mother’s hospital room, and found both him and his mother dead from gunshot wounds to their heads. The suspect was first identified as 50-year-old Warren Davis, and his mother as Jean Davis. Police later said that “Warren Davis” was an alias and that his real name was not known.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Frederick Bealefeld, who said that the department is “treating this case as a murder-suicide,” said that no officers reported hearing the shots that killed the two. Police had previously said that the gunman had been shot and killed by police, but police later said that that report was incorrect.

Transport for London wins first Anti-Social Behaviour Order against graffiti vandal
October 3rd, 2018 in Uncategorized | No Comments

Tuesday, September 25, 2007

Billy Murrell, a persistent graffiti vandal from South East London, has become the first recipient of an Anti-Social Behaviour Order (Asbo) granted to Transport for London (TfL) by Greenwich Magistrates. The civil order also bans him from the top deck of buses throughout England and Wales for three years.

Murrell, a 17-year-old from Plumstead, has a history of convictions for criminal damage on public transport, including vandalising a Tube carriage in Brixton station and for damaging buses and other public property using marker pens.

This is Transport for London’s first Anti-Social Behaviour Order against a graffiti vandal — TfL was granted the power to apply for Asbos by the Home Secretary in September 2006.

The Anti-Social Behaviour Order was issued at Greenwich Magistrates Court on 12 September and also bans him from carrying any permanent marker pens or any glass cutting equipment on London Underground, railway property or any other transport provider’s property.

Metropolitan and Transport police have been made aware of Murrell’s Asbo, and have distributed his photo.

In detail, Murrell is prohibited from:

 • Entering any depot, siding or other part of London Underground property or railway property or any transport providers property which is not expressly open to the public whether on payment or otherwise throughout England and Wales
 • Carrying the following articles, in any area specified (above) or in any public place, namely any form of unset paint in any form of container, any form of permanent marker pen, any form of shoe dye or permanent ink in any form of container, any form of paint stripper in any form of container, any form of grinding stone, glass cutting equipment, glass etching solution or paste, throughout England and Wales
 • Aiding, abetting, counselling or encourage any person who was attempting or committing any form of unlawful damage towards any property not belonging to or under the direct authorised control of the defendant throughout England and Wales
 • Travelling on the top deck of the any public transport bus within England and Wales

If without reasonable excuse the defendant does anything which he is prohibited from doing by this order, he shall be liable to a detention and training order, which has a maximum term of 24 months – 12 months of which is custodial and 12 months in the community

Upon turning 18 he will be liable to imprisonment up to five years.
