Understanding Your Rights Through The Help Of A Pedestrian Lawyer In King George, Va

byAlma Abell

In Virginia, it’s essential to understand the correlations between pedestrian’s rights and the laws of the road. By understanding these connections, you understand that while it is the responsibility of drivers to yield the right of way, it is equally the pedestrian’s responsibility to refrain from crossing illegally. According to pedestrian laws, walkers are required to cross via crosswalks and remain on the sidewalk. A deviation of these rules that causes an accident could deem them responsible partially for their resulting injuries.

Interpreting Pedestrian LawsAccording to Virginia’s laws, pedestrians cannot cross intersections of the highway in which they aren’t visible clearly. This could include areas that experience higher than average traffic. Areas within the highway in which curbs could obstruct the field of view for oncoming drivers could also fall within the parameters of non-crossing zones. For clarity regarding these laws, you should contact a pedestrian lawyer in King George VA area.

Understanding Shared FaultAfter an accident occurs, highway patrol investigates to identify an exact cause. By reviewing the scene, he or she can determine whether the pedestrian followed applicable laws for crossing highways. Equally, they determine if the motorist exceeded the posted speed limit. However, if the pedestrian fails to comply with laws by remaining responsible when walking through these areas, the court could indicate that a shared fault existed. To review the potential for shared fault, discuss your case with a Pedestrian Lawyer.

Alternately, the laws outline the rights of pedestrians in areas such as bus stops primarily. An accident involving a pedestrian who is boarding a school or city bus indicates that the motorist is at fault in most cases. Applicable laws require traffic to stop for school buses that are loading or unloading to prevent accident or injury. Equally, the laws protect pedestrians who utilize city-based transportation services.

Pedestrians and motorists alike should review the correlating laws in Virginia. By understanding these requirements, they could reduce the amount of accidents that occur each year. For pedestrians who sustain injuries due to non-compliance of these laws, they should contact a pedestrian lawyer in King George VA to secure their right to damages.

Ties found between Abu Ghraib prison abuse and Guantanamo Bay

Thursday, July 28, 2005

In testimony at a military hearing yesterday on abuses at the U.S. prison camp in Iraq, the former warden of Abu Ghraib, Maj. David Dinenna, said he attended in September 2003 a meeting with Maj. Gen. Geoffrey D. Miller, who was then commander of the Guantanamo Bay prison camp. Maj. Dinenna said Gen. Miller recommended using dogs, because of their effectiveness.

Two dog handler soldiers at Abu Ghraib stand accused in the hearing. Sgt. Santos A. Cardona, 31, and Sgt. Michael J. Smith, 24, are alleged to have used the dogs to threaten and intimidate prisoners. During the defendants’ testimony on Tuesday, they said the interrogation techniques used by them on prisoners was learned from a team of interrogators that was dispatched to Iraq from the Guantanamo Bay military base in Cuba.

The Article 32 military court proceeding, which concluded Wednesday in Fort Meade, Maryland, is a preliminary hearing to hear prosecution and defense arguments in the case. The Prosecution is seeking a court-martial with claims that the defendants acted criminally. The Defense contends the soldiers were following orders, and that the charges should be dropped.

The investigating officer of the military court, Maj. Glenn Simpkins, has two weeks to weigh the evidence that was presented. Some or all charges could be dropped, but if some charges stand, he will make a recommendation on how Sgts. Cardona and Smith should be dealt with when it goes to trial.

The two accused said in yesterday’s testimony that Col. Thomas M. Pappas, the top military intelligence officer at Abu Ghraib, approved the use of the dogs. Testimony was also heard from Pvt. Ivan L. “Chip” Frederick, now serving an 8-year sentence in Fort Leavenworth for his role as ringleader in the abuse, who testified by phone from prison that approval was given to use the dogs, and that a civilian interrogator was also sometimes involved in directing which prisoner cells were to be visited by dog handlers.

In addition to the use of dogs, aggressive interrogation techniques such as clothing removal and sleep deprivation were also part of the series of abuses. Staff Sgt. James Vincent Lucas previously had told Army investigators in Guantanamo that he left Cuba in 2003 to go to Iraq where he, as a member of a 6-man team, taught the “lessons learned” at Guantanamo, and served to “provide guidelines” to interrogators at Abu Ghraib.

Legislation sponsored by several Senate Republicans seeks to specifically regulate the treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo and other military prisons. A co-sponsor of the bill, Lindsey Graham (RSC), recently released declassified internal memos dating from 2003 and written by top military lawyers. They warned the Pentagon about the aggressive tactics at Guantanamo. The memos noted it would heighten the dangers for U.S. troops caught by the enemy.

Army charge sheets accuse Cardona and Smith with maltreating detainees from November 15, 2003, to January 15, 2004 by “directing, encouraging, or permitting [their] unmuzzled military working dog[s] to bark and growl at detainees in order to unlawfully harass and threaten the detainees and in order to make the detainees urinate or defecate on themselves.”

Cardona, of Fullerton, with the 42nd Military Police Detachment in Ft. Bragg, N.C., was charged with nine counts. Smith, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., with the 523rd Military Police Detachment in Ft. Riley, Kan., was charged with 14 counts.

Thursday, March 3, 2011

In a media event on March 2, Apple Inc. unveiled its iPad 2 tablet computer, the successor to the company’s iPad. The announcement was made at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, California. CEO Steve Jobs appeared at the event and introduced the new product, with FaceTime video messaging (with front and rear cameras) as well as a new dual-core Apple A5 processor.

The iPad 2 is an all new design and has several improvements over the original iPad. The device runs on an dual-core Apple A5 CPU. According to Jobs, the CPU’s new dual-core capability enhances multitasking and doubles the processing speed. Apple additionally introduced a magnetic ‘Smart Cover’ accessory that snaps to the front screen of the device along with several new apps ported from the Mac OS X operating system and the iPhone. These include iMovie, GarageBand, and Photo Booth. The new iPad introduces front and rear cameras which enable FaceTime. The new tablet is 15% lighter and 33% thinner than the previous version – thinner than an iPhone 4 – and has beveled edges. It will be available in black and white. The device continues to be capable of ten hours of battery life on a single charge.

The announcement comes after months of rumors about a successor to the original iPad. Competitors have designed tablets to compete with the iPad such as Motorola’s Xoom powered by the Android operating system. One research analyst predicted that iPads would still make up at least 20 million of the more than 24 million tablet computers sold in the United States in 2011. Another analyst credited the Apple’s App store for iPad’s continued success. The device will become available in the United States on March 11, 2011, available in 16, 32, or 64 gigabytes. iPad 2’s 3G models can connect to the wireless networks of AT&T or Verizon Wireless and Wi-Fi. The iPad 2 will start at US$499. In tandem with the announcement, Apple reduced the price of its original iPad to US$399. Shares of Apple inc. rose $2.81, closing at US$352.12 the day of the announcement.

Thabo Mbeki visits Zimbabwe amid rising violence

Friday, May 9, 2008

South African president Thabo Mbeki has arrived in Harare today to talk with Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe about the upcoming presidential run-off election. This comes amid claims that violence has risen in the country over the last few days.

The Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights claim there has been a “dramatic escalation in incidents of organised violence and torture” after the recent elections with “more than 900” documented as injured. The organization said in a statement that “the level of brutality and callousness exhibited by the perpetrators is unprecedented and the vicious and cowardly attacks by so-called war veterans on women, children and the elderly shames the memory of all true heroes of the liberation struggle”.

Mr. Mbeki is acting as a mediator for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and may have discussed elections and the recent crackdown on opposition by the Mugabe government, which has included the arrest of Davison Maruziva, editor of free newspaper The Standard, 22 deaths, the displacement of 40,000 opposition farming families and such a casualty influx into Harare hospitals that they are worried that plaster of Paris bandage supplies will soon be “exhausted”.

Talks between the two leaders at State House lasted for more than three hours before Mbeki left for the South African embassy in Harare.

Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of the largest opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), plans to announce whether he will stand for the run-off election in the South African city of Pretoria, where he is currently residing, tomorrow at 9:00 UTC.

Abby Cadabby debuts at Sesame Place today as a walkaround character

Abby Cadabby debuts at Sesame Place today as a walkaround character
April 1st, 2018 in Uncategorized | No Comments

Saturday, May 5, 2007

The Sesame Place theme park in Langhorne, Pennsylvania opened for its 2007 season this morning, adding Abby Cadabby to its all-star lineup of characters that children can meet.

Described as a “sweet, inquisitive enthusiastic three-year-old fairy-in-training” who loves making new friends, the character stars in a musical show called Abby Cadabby’s Treasure Hunt. Featuring all of the stars of Sesame Street, the production joins Elmo’s World Live: Fishes.

Abby was not the first recurring female character to be introduced to Sesame Street since 1993, as press materials for season 37 of Sesame Street proclaimed; Phoebe and Googel from the short-lived Monster’s Clubhouse segment both hold that title. She is however the first new female character since 1993 to show any lasting power. Her performer, Leslie Carrara, says Abby will appear in “almost every episode next season”.

The Langhorne, Pennsylvania attraction was opened in 1980, sparking robust commercial development in the town. While similar parks have opened in Irving, Texas, Tokyo, Japan, Monterrey, Mexico and São Paulo, Brazil, none of them managed to strike the hearts and minds of tourists.

Roller coaster Super Grover’s Vapor Trail, the Sky Splash water ride, and the “Rock Around the Block” musical parade all return for the 2007 season, as do other rides, shows, and physical play activities.

The park is open Friday through Sunday until 25 May, when the park begins opening daily. After Labor Day, Sesame Place is open weekends only until 27 October 2007.

Cost Saving Alternatives To Hotels

March 31st, 2018 in Boutique Hotels | No Comments

Submitted by: Jeremy Zongker

There are many money saving strategies to help you stay within your budget when traveling, and sleeping someplace other than a hotel may be the ideal cost saving alternative. Most standard hotel rooms do not include a kitchen, which means you have to buy all of your meals at a restaurant and this drastically increases the cost of travel. If you are lucky enough to book a hotel with a kitchenette, you can expect to pay an even higher nightly rate for the convenience.

Here are several options that give you a comfortable place to stay that are not hotels, and that offer more money-saving amenities, like kitchens, which will help you save money while traveling:

AirBNB.com

Use the website to search listings in the city you are traveling to. Homeowners and apartment renters who have space for travelers can list their properties on the website for free, and travelers can search all of the listings to find one that meets their needs.

Some listings may be for an extra bedroom in someone s home, some may be for the guest house or the entire home. You can stay one night, a week, or a month whatever you need and depending on the property availability. There are listings all over the world, so chances are you ll find a place to stay regardless of where you are traveling!

While you re on the road, you might even consider renting out your own property to a traveler looking to stay in your town. If you can rent out your home while you re gone, you can help finance the cost of your trip. You can become a host and list your property as well as the price you require.

HomeAway.com

You can find and rent a home from homeowners on homeaway.com instead of confining yourself to a hotel room. Use the Homeaway website to narrow down your options by location, type of home, home amenities and price. Choose a property that will fit your family, and read reviews of previous travelers who stayed in the property to make sure the property is a good fit for what you re looking for.

You can find available homes for rent for short term rentals (one or two nights); or long term vacations and trips. Some of the most popular vacation destinations are rented far in advance, so make sure you start your search early enough to find a property before someone else does!

VRBO.com

Vacation Rentals By Owner (Vrbo.com) is owned by Homeaway.com and works in pretty much the same exact way. You use the map to find the location you are traveling to, or type in the address, and vrbo.com will show you a list of available properties. You can refine your search by necessary amenities, the date you are traveling and price.

If you have a home you want to rent out, you can also list it on the site to earn money if someone needs a property in your area when you have it available.

KOA.com

If you enjoy camping, you can find cabins, RV sites, tent sites and unique accommodations (can you say Teepee or tree house?) in the style of camping through koa.com. There are more than 475 locations and 60,000 campsites to choose from. You can search for accommodations for one night or long-term stays, and you can narrow your options by sites with Wi-Fi and cable, fire rings, or even restaurants or food service nearby if you don t intend to cook on the open flame.

If you have your own RV or tent, koa.com can help you find places to set up camp in your travel destination. If you don t have a vacation home on wheels, you can look at available cabins or maybe tree house or train caboose rentals to find what you re looking for.

CruiseAmerica.com

If camping and RVs are your style of travel accommodations, you can find available RVs to rent from cruiseamerica.com. They come in various sizes to accommodate 3 to 7 people and are available in 128 locations around America. Instead of booking multiple hotels in various places for a cross country trip, for example, you could rent an RV and take your temporary vacation home on the road with you. Not only will you always have a place to sleep, but there are built-in kitchens so you can prepare your own meals instead of eating in restaurants every day, and living areas to enjoy some down time.
