Wikinews interviews former Salt Lake City mayor and 2012 presidential candidate Rocky Anderson

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Former Salt Lake City mayor and human rights activist Rocky Anderson took some time to discuss his 2012 U.S. presidential campaign and the newly-created Justice Party with Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Anderson served as mayor of Salt Lake City for eight years (2000–2008) as a member of the Democratic Party. During his tenure, he enacted proposals to reduce the city’s carbon emissions, reformed its criminal justice system, and positioned it as a leading sanctuary for refugees. After leaving office, Anderson grew critical of the Democratic Party’s failure to push for impeachment against President George W. Bush, and for not reversing policies on torture, taxes, and defense spending. He left the party earlier this year and announced that he would form a Third party.

Anderson officially established the Justice Party last week during a press conference in Washington D.C.. He proclaimed “We the people are powerful enough to end the perverse government-to-the-highest-bidder system sustained by the two dominant parties…We are here today for the sake of justice — social justice, environmental justice and economic justice.” The party promotes campaign finance reform and is attempting to appeal to the Occupy Wall Street movement. It is currently working on ballot access efforts, and will hold a Founding Convention in February 2012 in Salt Lake City.

Among other issues, Anderson discussed climate change, health care, education, and civil liberties. He detailed his successes as mayor of Salt Lake City, stressed the importance of executive experience, and expressed his views on President Barack Obama and some of the Republican Party presidential candidates. He spoke in depth about former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, with whom he worked during the 2002 Winter Olympics, and fellow Utahan, former governor and U.S. ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, Jr..

Cold TherapyKeeping your knee on ice will be helpful in reducing the pain. It can also slow the production of pain mediators to the area, slowing the nerve pain signals. You could pull out an ice pack from your freezer, but you need to use one that will give you continuous cycles of cold through a wrap around your knee. You can get this from a physical therapist or other medical professionals. You may be offered pain medications from your doctor after the surgery, and you should use it as directed by your doctor. Although it can help you cope with the pain while you’re recovering, it can also slow down your progress, especially if you’re too tired or dazed to remember your routine. You should wean yourself as quickly as possible and use cold therapy to reduce the pain as you work to heal.CryotherapyCryotherapy is similar to cold therapy, because it uses cold, but cryotherapy uses subzero temperatures. It is commonly used to treat various kinds of tissue damage. One of the common side effects to surgery is swelling. Swelling occurs as blood and other fluids in your body rush to the area to help your body work at healing itself. Cryotherapy can reduce the swelling in your knee while you heal. Your doctor may have a cryogenic chamber therapy to help you get the treatment that you require.Intermittent Pneumatic Compression (IPC)Intermittent Pneumatic Compression (IPC) is used with a knee wrap. It helps restore lymphatic flow while stimulating tissue healing. It boosts your connective tissue production, so your body can heal quicker. It can also help reduce your blood pressure to reduce swelling while improving your blood flow. Basically, IPC works to get your body to naturally speed up the recovery time to heal your knee.RestYou need to rest your body. Take the time to get plenty of good sleep, so your body can work to heal and repair itself. When you’re resting, your body can focus more energy into repairing itself. You should be walking around and getting your exercise as recommended by your doctor, but try to take it easy and relax as much as possible.Physical TherapyA physical therapist has the training and experience to help you recover from your surgery. Choose someone who has experience with knee surgery, so he or she can offer you exercises and stretches that you can do with your knee to strengthen your leg and help you recover as quickly as possible. You need to follow through and do your exercises in between sessions to make sure that you’re getting the most from your physical therapy. You should work on your plan for knee surgery recovery in Riverview, MI, with your doctor. He or she can work with you to determine the best treatment methods to help you work through the side effects and symptoms that you experience. Woman arrested after caught living in man’s closet

Saturday, May 31, 2008

In the town of Kasuya, Fukuoka, Japan, a 58-year-old woman was arrested after surveillance tape from inside an unnamed man’s home showed her living in his closet.

According to police, Tatsuko Horikawa had been living in his closet for over one year. One day when the man left, she walked through his front door which had been left unlocked. From then on, she would take small amounts of food from the kitchen and even take showers. When the man noticed food missing, he set up cameras to catch what he thought was someone robbing him.

The woman had placed a small bed mattress into a enclosed shelf area inside the closet to sleep on and when police searched the apartment, they found her curled up in the closet.

“We searched the house … checking everywhere someone could possibly hide. When we slid open the shelf closet, there she was, nervously curled up on her side,” said Hiroki Itakura, a police spokesman.

The woman, who was described by police as “neat and clean”, will be charged with trespassing.

Brazilian President Lula met Chavez, military and economic cooperation

Thursday, February 17, 2005

CARACAS, Venezuela –The Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met the Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on February 14, 2005 in Caracas, Venezuela. Brazil and Venezuela signed agreements of cooperation on many areas. According to the Brazilian government this was a strategical encounteur. This meeting is the first of three meetings that President Lula will have with South American Presidents in three days. The scheduled meetings are with the presidents of: Venezuela (February, 14), Guiana (February, 15) and Suriname (February, 16).

President Lula was accompanied by the following comitiva: the Minister of Development, Industry, and External Trade Luiz Fernando Furlan, the Minister of Finance Antônio Palocci, the Minister of Foreign Relations Celso Amorim, the Minister of Health Humberto Costa, the Minister of Mines and Energy Dilma Roussef, the Minister of Tourism Walfrido Mares Guia, the President of Petrobras José Eduardo Dutra, the President of National Economic and Social Development Bank (BNDES) Guido Mantega, the President of Eletrobrás Silas Rondeau Cavalcante Silva and the Special Secretary for Aquaculture and Fisheries José Fritsch. In addition a delegation of executives representing enterprises from Brazil accompanied the President.

The Brazilian Ministry of External Relations told the trip aims the construction of a strategical alliance and commercial integration between both countries. The Brazilian Presidential Advisor Marco Aurélio Garcia said:”With this gesture, Brazil will consolidate one of its major political goals, which is the constitution of a South American community of nations”. He added: “These agreements with Venezuela are strategical. We want this agreement as a model for other agreements in the region.”

According to President Lula the integration of the Latin America is the priority number one of his government. Days before the arrival in Venezuela and commenting about the trip Lula said: “We’re going to do the same thing in Colombia and in other countries in which integration is no longer a campaign speech but part of the way we deal with real things, day to day”.

The integration of the Latin America is the politics repeatedly proposed by Lula during the meetings of the Foro de São Paulo. According to him and the others members of the Foro there must be a integration among all the left parties and governments of Latin America. The union aims to be an alternative and opposing force to the politics and influence of the richest countries, mainly the United States. Among the organizations which are usually participants of the Foro de São Paulo are: Communist Party of Cuba, Colombian Communist Party, Communist Party of Bolivia, Communist Party of Brazil, Workers’ Party, Paraguayan Communist Party, Peruvian Communist Party, Socialist Party of Peru, National Liberation Army, Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front, Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unity, Tupamaros.

On December 4, 2001 during the 10th edition of the Foro de São Paulo in Havana Lula said:”A shoal of small fish may mean the finishing of the hungry in our countries, in out continent. We should not think as the History ended on our journey by the Earth. Even it happens just once, or with one gesture, let’s effectively contribute to the improve the life of millions of human beings who live socially excluded by this neoliberal model.”[1]

In Venezuela, once again, he brought out the integration wish: “This is the biggest dream I am carrying, that we can negotiate collectively, not like one country, but like a set of countries so we can do that our people may have the chance to conquer the full citizenship.”

Abhisit Vejjajiva administration on brink of collapse

Abhisit Vejjajiva administration on brink of collapse
March 9th, 2018 in Uncategorized | No Comments

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

In a televised statement on Monday, Thailand’s Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva blamed the loss of life last Saturday in Bangkok on armed terrorists who had infiltrated the Red Shirt protesters. He added that the security forces had opened fire only when fired upon.

The Prime Minister’s statement came as he was suffering a double blow to his authority. As coffins draped in Thai flags paraded through Bangkok to symbolise the death of democracy, Thailand’s electoral commission ruled that Vejjajiva’s Democrat Party should disband. In addition, the chief of the Thai Army, General Anupong Paojinda, publicly called for the dissolution of parliament.

Despite pressure from the Vejjajiva administration, the Thai Army, which traditionally has been politically significant in the country, has been reluctant to use force against the protesters, and will become even more so following what will be seen as innocent blood on its hands.

Even though Vejjajiva has stated that the government and military remain united, without the unequivocal support of the Thai military and security forces, his administration has very little room for maneuver.

Ironically, Vejjajiva may be saved from having to concede to the Red Shirts’ demands for fresh elections through the same process that deposed his predecessor and led to his own rise to the premiership. A court has ruled that Vejjajiva’s Democrat Party accepted 258 million baht in illegal campaign donations from cement maker TPI Polene. Under Thai law, the courts have the power to dissolve any party ruled to have broken electoral laws and to ban its members from public office for five years. This is the same law that in 2008 resulted in the disbanding of the People’s Power Party and the removal of Somchai Wongsawat from office. Leaders from both sides of the political divide have welcomed this development as a way to resolve the current deadlock.

However political commentators note that even with fresh elections the impasse that led to what is now known as Black Saturday would not end. Thai society has become increasingly polarised into pro-Thaksin Shinawatra and anti-Thaksin Shinawatra camps, and neither side will be willing to see the other side in power whatever the results of elections.

The violence on April 10, 2010, the worst for 20 years, saw the death of 21 people, four soldiers and sixteen civilians, including Reuters reporter Hiroyuki Muramoto.

Mortgage Refinance Loans In Reno Nevada

March 9th, 2018 in Finance | No Comments

byAlma Abell

Homeowners choose to refinance their mortgages to get a better interest rate, reduce the monthly payment, convert to a fixed interest rate, or consolidate debt. Refinancing a mortgage involves taking out a new loan with different terms. The new loan pays off the previous mortgage while covering additional charges for closing costs. When homeowners refinance a mortgage, they go through the same approval process that they did with the original loan. Lenders look at the owner’s current debt to income ratio, credit history, credit score, requested loan amount and current home value.

Great Basin Federal Credit Union is a lender that provides refinance loans in Reno Nevada. If you’re looking to refinance your mortgage, you’ll want to gather information from several lenders. Interest rates for mortgage loans fluctuate daily, but once you apply you can lock in the current day’s rate for up to 90 days. While the lender is underwriting your application, your interest rate won’t change. If for some reason the lender is unable to close on your loan before the rate lock expires, you have the option to pay a fee to extend the locked rate.

The federal government mandates that lenders underwrite HARP refinance loans in Reno Nevada and the rest of the country. A HARP refinance allows homeowners to get a new loan even if the loan to home value is higher than 80 percent or the applicant’s credit history doesn’t meet conventional loan standards. Applicants still have to meet borrower standards, but the standards are less stringent than normal. The government implemented the HARP program to help alleviate the impact of the 2008 housing crisis. HARP refinance loans can help homeowners who have negative equity, adjustable rate mortgages, or high monthly payments.

Depending upon the terms of mortgage loans in Reno Nevada, a homeowner could reduce his monthly payment, annual interest rate and length. Instead of being under a 30-year mortgage, a owner who refinances could get a 20-year loan. This is valuable if the homeowner has more than 20 years left on his current loan. It’s even more valuable if his interest rate drops from 5 or 6 percent to 3 or 4 percent. Although the monthly payment is likely to drop less than if he took out another 30-year loan at 3 or 4 percent, he’ll save more money in finance charges. Homeowners can refinance through their current lender or apply with a different bank.

According to the Pew Research Center, a non-advocacy organization that evaluates issues, attitudes and trends shaping the political landscape of the United States, centrism is on the rise in America. According to Pew, the number of Americans identifying themselves as independents has reached the highest level in 70 years.

Recently 36% of Americans say they are independents, 35% identify as Democrats, while 23% see themselves as Republicans. Some people are abandoning the major parties, re-registering as independent or joining third parties.

One of these third parties are the Modern Whig Party (MWP), who have enjoyed phenomenal growth over the past year; from just 3,000 members last summer to 30,000 now. With the Party’s commitment to “fiscal responsibility” and “bold social progression”, several conservative Democrats and centrist Republicans have been attracted to it.

Wikinews reporter Joseph Ford recently spoke with the Modern Whig Party’s chairman, Mike Lebowitz, about the MWP’s history, present state and future prospects. “Our membership is comprised of people from all parts of the mainstream political spectrum,” Lebowitz explains. He says that the MWP has “pragmatic, realistic, and mainstream” approaches to the numerous issues facing America today.

“A number of print and broadcast media outlets have even gone so far as to proclaim that the Modern Whig Party is “potentially viable,” and “makes sense”,” Lebowitz points out. “We are building this organization realistically, methodically and gradually in an effort to get this right.”

He went on to say much more — including why he thinks you should consider leaving the GOP or the Dems for the MWP — in the interview below.

Get A Bad Credit Home Equity Loan 5 Things To Avoid

March 8th, 2018 in Loan Agreements | No Comments

Find Out More About:

By Susan Willis

A home equity loan may be the ideal choice for homeowners who need quick access to cash. After all, equity loans provide the him or her with the opportunity to use the equity in their home as collateral against a new loan.

The proceeds from a home equity loan can be used for whatever the homeowner wants, including paying off debt, paying down medical bills, taking a vacation, throwing your daughter a wedding, or doing home improvements.

However, it can be a different story entirely if you have a bad credit score. Homeowners who have a low credit score often face the same issue each time they visit a new bank to apply for a home equity loan: rejection.

Sometimes, getting approved for a loan is just as much about what to avoid as it is about what to do. Homeowners with a low FICO score routinely find themselves stepping right into a situation whereby they make the wrong move and it costs them a loan offer.

If you are interested in qualifying for a bad credit home equity loan, here are 5 things to avoid:

1. Do not just approach any home mortgage lender for a loan:

As you may have already found out, the majority of home mortgage lenders are not interested in working with an individual with a less-than-perfect credit score. That is why it is essential that if you are in need of cash via an equity lender, do not just approach any given lender and apply for a loan. If you do, you will likely continue to experience the same pattern of rejection you have seen thus far.

Instead, look for “bad credit home equity lenders.” These are the ones who offer just what you need for someone in your situation.

2. Avoid failing to properly prepare:

Bad credit equity lenders are not just going to look at your credit score. Rather, they go much deeper than that. Gather together any documents that indicate your employment history, your current income, and any relevant items related to your personal financial history.

3. Do not just apply to one lender:

Many homeowners interested in a home equity loan end up only applying with a single lender. This is a big mistake. If you do this, you will likely not be offered the best-possible rate the first time around. Instead, improve your odds tremendously by applying to multiple lenders.

4. Avoid accepting the first offer you receive:

Since you are anxious to get access to cash quickly, you may be tempted to accept the first loan offer you receive. Avoid this temptation. Instead, apply to all of the lenders on your list.

5. Do not skip the fine print:

Remember, before signing this – or any type of – loan documents, be sure to read the fine print. Make sure you understand the repayment period, interest rate, and other important loan details.

Be sure to avoid these 5 common mistakes as you go after a bad credit home equity loan.
