World AIDS Day events held around the globe

Sunday, December 2, 2007

The 20th annual World AIDS Day was December 1, 2007. The theme selected by the World AIDS Campaign is “Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise” as it will be through 2010. The day was marked by thousands of events around the world.

“It is now time for bold leadership at all levels in order to turn the tide of HIV,” said Felicita Hikuam, Global Programmes Manager, World AIDS Campaign. An estimated 33.2 million people around the world—one in every 200—are living with HIV, and approximately 6,800 people are infected with HIV and 5,700 people die of AIDS-related illnesses every day.

“The trend is encouraging but still for every person receiving treatment four others are newly infected,” said Nelson Mandela, speaking at a concert in Johannesburg, South Africa. “If we are to stop the Aids epidemic from expanding, we need to break the cycle of new HIV infections. All of us working together with government, communities and civil society can make the difference that is needed,” he continued.

As many as 50,000 people attended the concert in Johannesburg, South Africa, which was telecast around the world. It was organized by Nelson Mandela’s 46664 AIDS campaign and featured performances by artists such as Peter Gabriel, Ludacris, Razorlight, the Goo Goo Dolls and Annie Lennox.File:20050702-Nelson Mandela Live8 Edinburgh.jpg

At a fundraiser in the town of Midrand, in the province Gauteng, near Johannesburg on Friday, singer Annie Lennox had strong words for the South African government’s AIDS policies.

“AIDS, as Madiba [Mandela] has said, is a human rights issue and should be treated as such in order to avoid this genocide that is affecting millions and millions of people around the world,” said Lennox in a speech. Lennox has previously been critical of the South African government’s position on suggesting some AIDS medications were toxic. “It is unacceptable that treatment has not been made available to those who need it most,” said Lennox.

The rock band Queen, which lost its lead singer Freddie Mercury to AIDS, released a new song entitled, Say It’s Not True, to coincide with World Aids Day. It has been made available as a free download from the band’s website. “By making the song available for free, we hope to help Nelson Mandela with his campaign to get across the message that no-one is safe from infection,” said Queen drummer Roger Taylor. “We have to be aware, we have to protect ourselves and those we love.”

In China, people distributed AIDS prevention brochures in the streets and promoted safe sex in cities like Beijing and Shanghai. In Changsha, official warning signs were put on hotel bedstands. The government announced on Friday an allocation of CNY860 million for AIDS prevention and control. According to official reports, there are estimated to be 700,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in China.

Also in China, the Miss World 2007 was in Sanya on World AIDS Day. The pageant presented a special tribute to the fight against AIDS, with a televised speech from former South African President Nelson Mandela, along with traditional dancers from South Africa who joined the contestants in a special song.

Friday, United States President George W. Bush urged the United States Congress to double the 2003 Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief to US$30 billion over the next five years. “Above all, we rededicate ourselves to a great purpose: We will turn the tide against HIV/AIDS—once and for all,” he said.

“I’m pleased to announce that Laura and I will travel to sub-Sahara Africa early next year,” Bush said. Sub-Saharan Africa suffered nearly three-quarters of AIDS-related deaths during 2006 and is home to two-thirds of those living with HIV/AIDS.

How To Detect And Prevent Air Leaks In Your Home}

How To Detect And Prevent Air Leaks In Your Home

by

Roberto Bell

If your house has air leaks, your electric or gas bill is going to reflect it pretty quickly. So how do you detect whether you have air leaks in your home and what do you do to prevent them?

A heated house is much like a chimney in that they both hold warm air and are surrounded by cold air. In this, a house will draw air in at the bottom and expel it at the top. All winter, a heated house is trying to push air through the top-floor ceiling into the attic. But when looking for air leaks, in addition to looking in the attic, you want to examine your whole house. Air can leave the house at any point, seeping out your precious warm air and letting in cool air.So what is the rule of thumb when looking for air leaks? To start, look any place that you may have what is called penetrations or discontinuities. Discontinuities could be where different materials meet, such as between brick and wood siding, between foundation and walls, and between the chimney and siding. Penetrations are places in your home where holes have been drilled for exhaust fans, ducts, chimneys etc. Look for small holes such as those created for electrical wiring and cable installations as well. Also look for bypasses, which are major air passages from any floor into the attic. Dropped ceilings in the room below will often conceal a direct connection to the attic. Concrete-block party walls between row houses also often move house air into the attic. To look for air leaks in the attic, go up in your attic at night and see if you can see any light shining through from the floor below. If your home is older, the most thorough way to prevent air leaks in an attic floor is to seal all areas where pipes, ducts, or wiring pass through the floor. Leaks can be sealed with caulking, expanding foam, plastic, or other methods.Another common area to examine for air leaks is around windows and doors. Starting with your windows, use a waterproof caulk and a caulking gun or simple weather stripping to seal any air leaks you may detect around a window’s frame or sill. Replace older windows with ones that offer greater protection from air leaks. Windows marked with the government’s Energy Star designation are ideal for insulating your home. The durable materials used in Energy Star window frames provide greater protection against air leaks. As for your doors, seal drafts that occur around exterior doors. Exterior doors contribute greatly to the problem of air leaks. To help stop drafts you can install a doorsill, weather stripping or a door sweep. Weather stripping or foam insulation strips can be purchased at your local hardware store and is available in varying thicknesses. Choose the thickness based on factors such as how tightly your door closes. If you can look at your door during the day and see light, you may want to use a thicker strip. If your door closes tightly, choose a thinner strip. You can place the strip on the areas where you feel heat loss. Typically on a door, placing the foam insulation strip along the inside of the door jam makes for a neater appearance and less people tend to notice it.Some of the less obvious places to check for air leaks is electrical outlets and light switches. Sometimes you can place your hand over these areas and see if you can feel a breeze. It is more common to have an air leak at the exterior walls, but depending on how your home was built you may have air leaks at the interior walls as well. Electrical outlet and light switch insulators are a great place air likes to come in. Check these as well.Next, if your home has plumbing coming in directly from under the house, these areas can be left unsealed. Look under the sink for any holes around the plumbing pipes. Foam insulation can be placed around the pipe to seal small gaps. For larger gaps consider stuffing the holes with steel wool and taping over it with duct tape. This will not only seal the air leak but also prevent mice and rats from chewing through to the inside of your home. If your plumbing pipe has a cap around it, pull the cap away from the wall. If there is a hole, simply use the foam insulation strip to fill in the hole by wrapping a small strip around the pipe.If you cannot seem to figure out where your house is leaking air, an infrared scan can be used. A professional can examine your house with this heat-sensitive camera and then be able to provide you with where there is at least 10 C difference in temperature between inside and outside air.If you are on a tight budget, consider closing off rooms that you do not commonly use. Close off air vents in the room and keep the door to that room closed. Place a towel at the bottom of the outside of the door to prevent the cold air from getting to the rest of the house. This works really well and helps to save money on the heating and air bills. When you seal up your home, you will notice pretty quickly a difference in your energy bill and possibly find yourself a lot more comfortable during the harsh winter and summer months.

IBM to launch software that works on Linux, Windows and Macintosh

IBM to launch software that works on Linux, Windows and Macintosh

Monday, February 12, 2007

On Sunday the representatives of International Business Machines Inc. said that the company will launch its new desktop software system for businesses. IBM’s new product is called “Open Client Offering”. The company hopes that its product will put Macintosh or Linux software on a more equal footing with Windows.

The Open Client Offering software was developed by IBM in-house, as well as with partners like Novell Inc. and Red Hat Inc. It is to answer the questions regarding the cost-effectiveness of managing Linux or Apple desktop personal computers alongside Windows PCs.

IBM officials stated that Open Client Offering will allow enterprises to use the same software on Windows, Linux or Apple’s OS X. It will be unnecessary for companies using Open Client to pay Microsoft for licenses for operations because these will no longer rely on Windows-based software.

Scott Handy, IBM’s vice president of Linux and open source, stated that the company worked together with the open source community and in the end found a way to develop a software that is able to function regardless of the operating system.

To create an alternative to Microsoft, IBM is going to offer Open Document Format software that the company developed for word processing, spreadsheets or presentations, instant messaging and blog tools and Internet Explorer’s long time rival – Firefox Web browser.

The software developers at IBM believe that the usage of Open Client Offering can cut the cost of managing applications as well as maintenance and cost regarding customer support on company networks that require other software rather than Windows.

PSA Peugeot Citroen, being the second largest car manufacturer, signed a multi-year agreement with Novell, which is the provider of Linux software, to run Linux on its 20,000 desktop PCs. In addition Linux will be installed on 2,500 server computers.

RedMonk’s analyst, Stephen O’Grady, said that today there is a strong appetite for Windows alternatives. However, he said, this doesn’t mean that the alternatives are to displace Windows wholesales. O’Grady outlined that no one is going to significantly damage the desktop dominance of Microsoft.

2012 Report on Gender Equality and Development says US women have room for progress
September 15th, 2022 in Uncategorized | No Comments

Friday, September 27, 2013

Tuesday, World Bank released the 2012 World Development Report on Gender Equality and Development. The United States is referred to many times, often as a benchmark to foster understanding of recent gains for women in other parts of the globe. At the same time, United States women still lag behind US men in a number of areas.

In 2012, the authors note women in the United States still face challenges economically and socially. They are represented disproportionately in certain professions like teaching and nursing. They are paid less than their male counterparts. Jobs traditionally held by women also result in lower wages for men who hold these jobs. They are under-represented at the highest level of business, with only 28 of Fortune 1000 companies having a female chief executive officer. The bottom 20% of women economically have a slightly higher birth rate than their peers in the top 20%.

Immigrants to the United States from Southeast Asia and India have higher than expected male to female birth ratios, which the report authors suggest is partially deliberate sex selection based on cultural attitudes from home countries. In 2009, over half a million US women were victims of intimate partner violence. The report suggests US men have greater pension assets than US women. When compared to elderly US men, elderly women in the United States are more likely to live alone than with a spouse. US women are disproportionately under-represented in local police forces, accounting for less than 20% of all police officers. Women in the United States also bear a higher percentage of housework duties than men at 61%. When US women take part time work while raising children, they find it difficult to use that work experience to gain future full time employment. US women are disincentivized from re-entering the workforce after giving birth because of the high cost of childcare.

Many of the gains for United States women took place a while ago and took a long time to get. It took 40 years, 1870–1910, to see major improvements in the percentage of girls aged 6 to 12 attending school. In 1921, after women got the right to vote in the United States, the United States Congress passed the Promotion of the Welfare and Hygiene of Maternity and Infancy Act. This assisted in lowering infant mortality from 23% to 15%.

The report says affirmative action in the United States resulted in jobs transferring from men to women, but the authors hedged and did not draw a conclusion about the economic impact of these legislative efforts other than to say the impact was not negative.

Many of the legislative victories for United States women came early compared to developing countries. Property rights for women, while later than some of their European counterparts like Norway and the United Kingdom, started to come by 1848. That year, the Married Women’s Property Act was passed in New York. It was the first legislation of its kind in the country. Other states soon followed. Women got suffrage on a state-by-state level in the country until they got federal suffrage in 1920. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 barred discrimination against women and allowed married women to make loans without their husband’s consent. In 1980, airlines were barred from discriminating against flight attendances for their marital status during the hiring and firing stage.

The number of United States respondents agreeing with the proposition “a university education is more important for a boy than for a girl” decreased from about 14% in the period between 1994 and 1999 to about about 9% in the period between 2005 and 2007. Similarly, the number of people who agreed with “when jobs are scarce, men should have more right to a job than women” decreased from 19% to about 8% over the same period.

The report cites current research from the United States and England showing the more education a mother has, the better the outcomes for her children will be.

Currently in the United States, females academically outperform their male counterparts in all academic areas including [[mathematics|math] and science. On the Programme for International Student Assessment math test though, US boys tested better than US girls by a score of roughly 495 to 480. US girls outperform boys on the literacy test with mean scores of approximately 510 to 490. In this regard, the report suggests US girls’ performance patterns resemble global ones.

Mali’s percentage of girls in primary school is equivalent to the United States in 1810 at around 34%. Burkino Faso is worse, matching the United States in 1780 with a percentage of roughly 25%. Niger’s current enrollment for girls is around 50%, around the same percentage as the United States in 1900.

South Australia enters week-long lockdown to contain COVID-19 Delta variant spread
September 14th, 2022 in Uncategorized | No Comments

Friday, July 23, 2021

With five active cases of the Delta variant of COVID-19, South Australia begun a one-week lockdown on Monday. Announcing the lockdown, state Premier Steven Marshall declared “we have no alternative but to impose some fairly heavy and immediate restrictions”.

The first case out of South Australia’s active cases was presented to Modbury Hospital on Sunday night, having returned from Argentina earlier this month. The fifth, which Premier Marshall noted as “far more worrying”, visited The Greek on Halifax restaurant at the same time as someone who was later confirmed to be carrying the virus. Chief Public Health Officer for the state Nicola Spurrier said “if anyone has been at The Greek on Halifax they need to get into quarantine and get tested”.

In accordance with new regulations, there are only five reasons for South Australians to leave home: essential work, shopping for essential goods such as food, exercise, but only with people from the same household and within 2.5 kilometers (2 mi) of home, medical reasons (which includes testing and vaccination against the coronavirus, but excludes elective and cosmetic surgery), and caregiving.

Schools have closed for all but children of essential workers, with online learning having begun on Thursday. Face masks are also be mandated for those who leave home. ABC News reported that “support for businesses is expected to be announced…”, with all non-essential retail required to close under the new regulations.

How To Find A New Dentist?

September 13th, 2022 in Dentistry | No Comments

Submitted by: Kely Travis

Finding a new dentist can be difficult. A new dentist is usually required when you have moved to a new area. Reputable dental practitioners are hard to come by. There are ways to make your search for a new and reliable dental doctor a little easier. Dental doctors vary in professional experience and training, and hence it is crucial for you to get the services of a dentist who is experienced and knows how to take care of problems related to teeth. A good professional should have the necessary qualifications and should be able to prove that he or she has treated patients with a certain degree of success.

The most obvious way of trying to find a good dental doctor is to ask friends for recommendations. If you are new to an area, recommendations might be difficult to get since you might not have any friends in the area. If this is the case, you might ask your colleagues at work for recommendations. This will provide you with information on good dentists who are professional and who can provide quality dental care. This will also give you an idea of dentists you should stay away from.

Another effective way of looking for a dentist is by searching the internet. Any professional who has a dental clinic will have a website or will advertise through other websites, so the internet can provide viable leads for you. Insurance company websites might also have information on dental practitioners so it may be good to visit them once in a while. The internet also has listings of available dental clinics in your area.

You can check the addresses of the clinics in your area and pick out those that are near you. This will give you a chance to go and visit the clinics so that you can determine which one would be the best for you. Checking various websites like Doctor Roogle will help significantly. Doctor Roogle is a website that gives people a platform for reviewing and rating dental surgeons. The patients talk about the services they received, and if they were satisfied with the dental work that was performed.

Dental directories also give other details about dental practices in your area, not only physical and web addresses. If you cannot visit local clinics near you, you can find their phone numbers in the dental directory and simply telephone them for more information. Ask them about their treatment fees and find out what insurance they accept. It is also important to inquire about their emergency services so that you know what to expect should you experience a dental emergency.

Once you have identified a dentist who is qualified and experienced enough to meet all your dental needs, it is important to have a one-on-one chat so that you can fully understand his or her services and expertise. This will enhance the sense of trust that you have and will make you feel more comfortable with your new dentist. You cannot find a good dental doctor without some research so make sure you obtained sufficient information before settling on a specific dentist. Take a tour of the doctor s clinic so that you can assess his or her level of hygiene and the type of tools that he or she uses for dental treatments. The hygiene and technology used in a dental clinic can make the difference between an average dentist and an excellent one.

Senior Chinese official executed for spying for Taiwan
September 12th, 2022 in Uncategorized | No Comments

Thursday, August 10, 2006

A Chinese government official convicted of working for the Taiwanese government has been executed, and thousands of civil workers viewed the taped trial for “educational purposes” on Monday. The prisoner’s name was Tong Daning and was in his mid-50’s and held a rank just under “Assistant-Minister” before he was found guilty of espionage. According to the anonymous sources, Daning had been selling state sources for over 15 years, making a profit of about US$250,000.

Daning is the highest ranking person executed in China since 1999, when a Major General and Senior Colonel were executed for selling state secrets. China and Taiwan have been spying on each other ever since 1949, when the People’s Republic of China was officially created, but that has not stopped over 1 million Taiwanese citizens from working and investing over 100 billion USD in China. There have been many cases of espionage within the last few years, with all but two resulting in a death sentence.

Cambridge, Massachusetts —The planning board of Cambridge, Massachusetts voted in unanimous approval of Harvard University‘s plan to build a 410,000 ft² (38 090 m²) science center at 24 Oxford Street, according to the local newspapers, the Harvard Crimson and the Cambridge Chronicle. More than half of the space in the building will be constructed underground.

The Northwest Science Building, as it will be called, will house the laboratories of roughly 30 Harvard science faculty members, as well as a chilled water plant and an electrical substation. The building was designed by Craig Hartman, an architect in the San Francisco office of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, who also completed Harvard University Master Plan in 2002, according to the firm’s website. Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill also designed such notable buildings as Chicago‘s Sears Tower and the recently completed international terminal at the San Francisco airport.

The vote to approve the plan occurred at the February 15, 2005, meeting of the Cambridge Planning Board at the City Hall Annex, 344 Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge. In what the Harvard Crimson called a “departure from the norm,” there were no comments from residents at the hearing. The Crimson reported that the Harvard officials at the meeting took this as “a signal that the community was well-informed about the project prior to the presentation.” The sign advertising the hearing can be seen at right.

In related news, the Director of Urban Design for Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill’s New York office, Vishaan Chakrabarti, will be speaking at the Harvard Graduate School of Design on March 1, 2005.

Role Of Sensors In Todays Industrial Sector}

September 10th, 2022 in Networkings Solutions | No Comments

Submitted by: Rahul Suresh

The world today relies heavily on machinery of all kinds and we are moving into an era where human effort and supervising is replaced by automation sensor technology everywhere. Besides sensors today are used in all kinds of personal, commercial and industrial applications for multiple benefits. They come in multiple sizes, shapes, materials and categories for a wide range of applications. From simple temperature sensor products to heavy duty motion and gas sensor products, we rely on sensors for several critical real time applications.

So what does an automation sensor do for you in reality?

In simple terms, it is designed to alert you i.e. the person or a system about any change that occurs in its deployed environment. It might trigger a new event or indicate the occurrence of a problem or a deviation from normal workflow. They are mainly aimed at regulatory control of machines in operation. A simple example is the presence of several electrical sensors for regulating current flow to industrial machines. They help a person or a system to prepare for an event or take action for an event that has already occurred.

Today you can find different categories of sensors in the market that adhere to several needs. Some popular examples include

Temperature sensor products

These products have applications in industrial and power sectors where several heavy components work on the basis of temperature variations and readings. Temperature sensors provide feedback to critical mission systems that in turn control machines to alter production parameters to offer the best working conditions for maximum output. These sensors find widespread applications in areas such as power plants where temperature readings are often the basis for shut down and turn on of machinery.

Gas Sensor products

Gas sensor products are widely used in areas where critical operational parameters are often based on the presence of gaseous components. They are mostly found in production facilities of chemical vapor substances. Vapor sensors are useful to determine the start and stop of production units and are absolutely essential for high power industrial units. Gas sensors also find usage in automobile pollution testing units and other vehicular systems.

Chemical Sensors

Chemical sensors are widely used in the industrial sector today in areas such as chemical plants, oil refineries, petroleum complexes, etc. where composition of several compounds are determined based on the readings from sensors placed throughout these units.

Electrical and Electronic Sensors

These sensors are an essential part of both domestic and industrial sectors as voltage and current are two of the most regulated energy parameters on the planet. It is these electrical sensors and electronic sensors that provide accurate data to the persons concerned which in turn results in decision making for a large number of factors.

Mechanical and Motion sensors

These are often the core of automobiles and other moving machinery and is widely used in industrial sectors for a large number of purposes as well.

Pressure Sensors

These sensors determine the force that is applied while performing industrial operations and is often the basis for determining the start and stop instances of heavy duty machinery.

The above are some of the most commonly found categories in the industrial sector today. There are several more and today without sensors, it is quite impossible to have our industries up and running smoothly.
