Ingrid Newkirk, co-founder of PETA, on animal rights and the film about her life

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

Last night HBO premiered I Am An Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA. Since its inception, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has made headlines and raised eyebrows. They are almost single-handedly responsible for the movement against animal testing and their efforts have raised the suffering animals experience in a broad spectrum of consumer goods production and food processing into a cause célèbre.

PETA first made headlines in the Silver Spring monkeys case, when Alex Pacheco, then a student at George Washington University, volunteered at a lab run by Edward Taub, who was testing neuroplasticity on live monkeys. Taub had cut sensory ganglia that supplied nerves to the monkeys’ fingers, hands, arms, legs; with some of the monkeys, he had severed the entire spinal column. He then tried to force the monkeys to use their limbs by exposing them to persistent electric shock, prolonged physical restraint of an intact arm or leg, and by withholding food. With footage obtained by Pacheco, Taub was convicted of six counts of animal cruelty—largely as a result of the monkeys’ reported living conditions—making them “the most famous lab animals in history,” according to psychiatrist Norman Doidge. Taub’s conviction was later overturned on appeal and the monkeys were eventually euthanized.

PETA was born.

In the subsequent decades they ran the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty against Europe’s largest animal-testing facility (footage showed staff punching beagle puppies in the face, shouting at them, and simulating sex acts while taking blood samples); against Covance, the United State’s largest importer of primates for laboratory research (evidence was found that they were dissecting monkeys at its Vienna, Virginia laboratory while the animals were still alive); against General Motors for using live animals in crash tests; against L’Oreal for testing cosmetics on animals; against the use of fur for fashion and fur farms; against Smithfield Foods for torturing Butterball turkeys; and against fast food chains, most recently against KFC through the launch of their website kentuckyfriedcruelty.com.

They have launched campaigns and engaged in stunts that are designed for media attention. In 1996, PETA activists famously threw a dead raccoon onto the table of Anna Wintour, the fur supporting editor-in-chief of Vogue, while she was dining at the Four Seasons in New York, and left bloody paw prints and the words “Fur Hag” on the steps of her home. They ran a campaign entitled Holocaust on your Plate that consisted of eight 60-square-foot panels, each juxtaposing images of the Holocaust with images of factory farming. Photographs of concentration camp inmates in wooden bunks were shown next to photographs of caged chickens, and piled bodies of Holocaust victims next to a pile of pig carcasses. In 2003 in Jerusalem, after a donkey was loaded with explosives and blown up in a terrorist attack, Newkirk sent a letter to then-PLO leader Yasser Arafat to keep animals out of the conflict. As the film shows, they also took over Jean-Paul Gaultier‘s Paris boutique and smeared blood on the windows to protest his use of fur in his clothing.

The group’s tactics have been criticized. Co-founder Pacheco, who is no longer with PETA, called them “stupid human tricks.” Some feminists criticize their campaigns featuring the Lettuce Ladies and “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” ads as objectifying women. Of their Holocaust on a Plate campaign, Anti-Defamation League Chairman Abraham Foxman said “The effort by PETA to compare the deliberate systematic murder of millions of Jews to the issue of animal rights is abhorrent.” (Newkirk later issued an apology for any hurt it caused). Perhaps most controversial amongst politicians, the public and even other animal rights organizations is PETA’s refusal to condemn the actions of the Animal Liberation Front, which in January 2005 was named as a terrorist threat by the United States Department of Homeland Security.

David Shankbone attended the pre-release screening of I Am An Animal at HBO’s offices in New York City on November 12, and the following day he sat down with Ingrid Newkirk to discuss her perspectives on PETA, animal rights, her responses to criticism lodged against her and to discuss her on-going life’s work to raise human awareness of animal suffering. Below is her interview.

Laser Lipo Reviews The Advantages Of I Lipo

By Louise Smith

Hi this article is a quick review of I lipo which is a new popular weight loss procedure in this I lipo review we will be looking at the treatment, the results and the cost of this sort of treatment.

I lIpo is a relatively new weight loss procedure, it is called I lipo due to the results it produces being very similar to that of a traditional liposuction surgery procedure, the advantage however of this procedure is that it is totally non-intrusive, this means there is no surgery required at all, this will obviously mean that there will be no pain and no unsightly scars after the treatment like what you would expect after any kind of surgical procedure like liposuction or other procedures like tummy tucks which both involve extensive surgical procedures.

So what is I lipo and what does the procedure consist of?

It is basically a technique that uses laser energy emitted through pads that are placed on your body in the specific area you are treating this effects the structure of fat cells in the body causing them to break down into free fatty acids and glycerol, which are then absorbed through the cell membrane channels and then transported around the body to be used for energy, this process is something that already happens in the body naturally when the body needs to use stored energy reserves therefore the procedure merely helps with an already natural accruing bodily function that happens in the body in the right situation naturally, this also means there are no adverse effects to the surrounding cells tissue or skin.

The procedure itself has been through a number of independent medical trials and is often compared to surgical procedures like liposuction.

Ultra sound has shown that after just 1 treatment in some cases up to 30% of fat in the treated area has been reduced, results can be seen almost instantly however it is recommended to do some light exercise after the procedure to speed up the process by burning the broken down fat that has been distributed through the body.

Possibly the best thing about this procedure is that I Lipo is completely painless unlike other common weight loss surgerys which can cause a lot of pain and scarring and remain painful for quite a while, a lot of people consider the feeling of I Lipo to actually be quite relaxing due to the pads that emit the laser being nice and warm.

So how much does ILipo cost? Well it is quite an affordable procedure each treatment costs around 100 with a recommended 8 treatments on average obviously some people will need less and some may need more but at an average of just 800 this really is an amazingly cheap alternative to real cosmetic surgery.

We hope you have enjoyed this article and hopefully it has given you a better understanding of this procedure if you would like to learn more about the procedure of I Lipo and why many consider it to be one of the best weight loss solutions in the market place.

Al Sharpton speaks out on race, rights and what bothers him about his critics

Al Sharpton speaks out on race, rights and what bothers him about his critics

Monday, December 3, 2007

At Thanksgiving dinner David Shankbone told his white middle class family that he was to interview Reverend Al Sharpton that Saturday. The announcement caused an impassioned discussion about the civil rights leader’s work, the problems facing the black community and whether Sharpton helps or hurts his cause. Opinion was divided. “He’s an opportunist.” “He only stirs things up.” “Why do I always see his face when there’s a problem?”

Shankbone went to the National Action Network’s headquarters in Harlem with this Thanksgiving discussion to inform the conversation. Below is his interview with Al Sharpton on everything from Tawana Brawley, his purported feud with Barack Obama, criticism by influential African Americans such as Clarence Page, his experience running for President, to how he never expected he would see fifty (he is now 53). “People would say to me, ‘Now that I hear you, even if I disagree with you I don’t think you’re as bad as I thought,'” said Sharpton. “I would say, ‘Let me ask you a question: what was “bad as you thought”?’ And they couldn’t say. They don’t know why they think you’re bad, they just know you’re supposed to be bad because the right wing tells them you’re bad.”

Turkey blocks Wikipedia, alleging smear campaign

Saturday morning, at 8:00 a.m. local time (0500 UTC), residents of Turkey who tried to view Wikipedia in any language received only a “connection timed out” screen. According to watchdog group Turkey Blocks, this was not a technical issue but rather the Turkish government barring access to the crowdsourced encyclopedia under a law stipulating it can block websites that contain obscenities or threats to national security.

Just hours later, roughly 3900 officials, scholars, clerks, prison guards, and other employees suspected of being anti-government were fired.

The Turkish government has allegedly previously blocked international websites such as Facebook and Twitter, often after militant attacks or other unpopular events, but has blamed the “outages” on overload from users seeking information. The government did not immediately claim credit for blocking access to Wikipedia, as such, but the Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications Ministry said access will be restored if Wikipedia removes some content claiming the Turkish government is working with militant groups and issued a statement to the state-run Andalou news agency: “Instead of coordinating against terrorism, [Wikipedia] has become part of an information source which is running a smear campaign against Turkey in the international arena.”

Wikimedia Foundation spokesperson Juliet Barbara told NPR, “We are committed to ensuring that Wikipedia remains available to the millions of people who rely on it in Turkey. To that end, we are actively working with outside counsel to seek judicial review of the decision affecting access to Wikipedia. We hope the issue can be resolved promptly.”

The government did publicly announce the firings, stating that everyone dismissed was suspected of associating with “terrorist organisations and structures presenting a threat to national security” and it has connected recent similar actions to the failed coup in the country last year.

This is the second political purge to take place since Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an was granted considerable additional powers after the April 16 constitutional referendum.

The Turkish government also banned televised dating shows, stating “such programmes in which people are introduced to find a friend[…] cannot be permitted.”

Call The Laser Medical Centre And Say Goodbye To Stretch Marks}

Call the Laser Medical Centre and say goodbye to stretch marks

by

Laser CentreWasn’t nine months of pregnancy difficult enough? Do you really need to endure a lifetime of stretch marks too? Not anymore. The Laser Medical Centre in Toronto now offers a number of treatments to help women recapture their pre-pregnancy bodies.

Using the same treatments that help ugly scars vanish, the Laser Medical Centre gets rid of unsightly stretch marks by using one of four different techniques. Laser therapy, Omnilux, microdermabrasion, and Oxyjete treatments are four different methods in which the Laser Medical Centre specializes. Visit the centre today at www.lasercentre.ca or see which technique is right for you.

Stretch marks are much like scar tissue, in that they are essentially the result of a lack of collagen and eslastin in your skin. Collagen and elastin form strong bonds and help maintain your skin’s moisture and elasticity. The Laser Medical Centre can help you determine which of the following procedures is the best way to reduce or completely get rid of stretch marks by rejuvenating the affected skin.

Laser Therapy

A special laser beam is transmitted through the skin, loosening the collagen fibers, and thus the essense of the stretch mark. The laser energy also creates a mild inflammation in the dermis, which causes the body to restructure the area and create new skin. After five or six monthly treatments, the tissue will be healed and the stretch mark virtually non-existent.

Omnilux

The Omnilux Red is used to remove stretch marks with the use of professional ingredients to help regenerate your skin’s cells. Once regenerated, the appearance of scarring (the stretch marks) will be reduced. A red lamp is used to stimulate the ingredients to help them penetrate deeper into the skin, prompting faster and more effective results. Patients can expect to see exceptional results after eight to 10 twice-weekly treatments.

Microdermabrasion

This nearly painless procedure removes dead skin from the surface to promote the creation of new skin. This constant renewal of skin will lead to a reduction in the appearance of stretch marks. Microdermabrasion is an ideal procedure to combine with Omnilux or Oxyjet.

Oxyjet

Because the skin continuously loses collagen and elasticity, stretch marks can become more prominent over time. Oxyjet reduces the appearance of stretch marks by penetrating the skin’s surface and restoring the area with pure oxygen and Oxyjet’s active ingredients. It’s safe, painless, and allows for fast results.

Jackson family seeking second autopsy

Jackson family seeking second autopsy

Sunday, June 28, 2009

Citing a lack of results from the primary autopsy by the Los Angeles (LA) Coroner’s Office of Michael Jackson’s body, the Jackson family has requested that an independent coroner examine the body in hopes of finding the cause of death.

The LA Coroner’s have ruled out foul play, but the toxicological tests could take as long as 6 weeks, and as of now have not specified the reason for Jackson’s death. The Coroner’s officer has stated though the decision for an independent autopsy was surprising, they didn’t have any issues with allowing it.

Dr. Murray has been co-operating with authorities from the outset and will continue to do so.

The Jackson family has been unable to contact Michael Jackson’s personal physician, Conrad Murray, who was with the star during his final hours. Police have stated that Dr. Murray is not a suspect, but they are attempting to set up an interview.

Reverend Jesse Jackson, an American civil rights activist and Baptist minister, has been in contact with the family and has been providing counseling. He stated “they [the Jacksons] didn’t know the doctor…He should have met with the family, given them comfort on the last hours of their son.” An associate of Ed Chernoff, Dr. Murray’s lawyer, stated that “contrary to what has been out there, Dr. Murray has been co-operating with authorities from the outset and will continue to do so.”

Surveillance cameras in New South Wales schools cause alarm

Surveillance cameras in New South Wales schools cause alarm
July 24th, 2022 in Uncategorized | No Comments

Sunday, July 8, 2007

Installations of closed-circuit television (CCTV) security cameras into schools in the Australian state of New South Wales has alarmed teachers.

Over 50 schools in New South Wales already have surveillance cameras in playgrounds and outside dining areas. The concern from teachers arises from the pending installation of further cameras inside classrooms and also corridors.

Teachers have expressed concerns about privacy and misuse of the equipment. Senior vice-president of the New South Wales Teachers Federation, Bob Lipscombe, said that teachers are worried about the footage being used improperly, as well as the fact that both teachers and students would be filmed at work by the cameras.

The increase in security cameras being used in schools is an attempt to protect valuable schooling equipment from theft and damage, in particular computers in computer rooms. Lipscombe said that installations in computer rooms will potentially affect many teachers, as all subjects can be taught with the integration of technology.

CCTV surveillance is preferred by some schools over fitting alarm systems and physical bars on entrances to the room, as it is cheaper to install.

“[Teachers] are concerned about its improper use and that it may be taken out of context”

Lipscombe said that the Teachers Federation isn’t against CCTV systems provided they are operated properly and with appropriate consent. A solution proposed is to only have the surveillance system record during times when the room is unattended.

A spokesperson for the New South Wales Department of Education and Training has said that the footage obtained is confidential and used to assist police in investigating criminal activity.

3 Reasons To Check Out Condominiums For Sale In Colchester

July 19th, 2022 in Puppies For Sale | No Comments

byadmin

Choosing a residence is a big decision. With all of the property currently available, potential buyers need to weigh out the pros and cons of each different location. Today, there are several reasons to take a second look at Condominiums For Sale in Colchester.

Walking Distance to Local Sites

Condominiums tend to be located right in the middle of an urban area. This means that a lot of commerce is within walking distance. Residents can avoid taking out the car and instead, walk to the store, to the park and in some cases, to work. This adds to the convenience of owning a condo and saves money when it comes to gas and car maintenance.

Less of an Investment Than a Home

The down payment along with the monthly mortgage can be considerably higher for a home when compared to that of Condominiums For Sale in Colchester. For those looking to purchase their first property or individuals that don’t have a lot of money for a down payment, a condominium is an ideal alternative to a single family home. It makes property ownership more manageable and more immediate. For many, this makes a condominium an appealing option.

Low Maintenance

In addition to the savings on a down payment and the monthly mortgage, a condominium requires a lot less maintenance than a house. The smaller square footage decreases the maintenance costs and the decreased yard size tends to help with the overall savings for the property. While there is still plenty of space inside and outside of the condo, residents aren’t the sole person responsible for its upkeep. Even when factoring in a potential maintenance fee, the money savings is still significant.

When the time comes to find a new place to live, Contact Signature Properties of VT. While there are plenty of properties to choose from, there are real benefits to giving condominiums a second look. Because of the location, the convenience of walking becomes a real priority. And, with less of a down payment, a monthly mortgage, and maintenance costs, condos could provide a new residence with lots of money saving opportunities. Don’t miss out on the benefits that come with taking a second look at condominiums in the area.

“Woofstock” dog festival in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

“Woofstock” dog festival in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

North America’s largest outdoor dog festival came back to Toronto last weekend for its fifth year. It ran from the 9th of June to the 10th of June at Toronto’s historical St. Lawrence Market. A Wikinews reporter was there on Sunday to report on some of the events that happened on the last day.

The “Woofstock” dog festival attracted as many as 140,000 people with their dogs. The festival had tons of accessories, sold under tents, to buy for dogs; food, toys, designer clothes, and more. About 400 vendors and exhibitors were there to promote their products, which also gave private dog companies or groups a chance to show their new products. The local SPCA and some animal rescues were under tents answering questions from visitors. While walking, all visitors could see the CN Tower and other very tall buildings.

One of the local TV stations, Citytv, was there. They hosted a live event at the show which was broadcast on TV. People came up on the stage and asked questions regarding their dogs and the host and co-host answered them.

A man, who called himself the “Chalk Master”, drew two pictures on pavement with chalk. He did it for free but donations were welcome. One was a picture of a girl’s head beside a dog’s head, and another with a wolf.

“Hello Humans. I’ve been invited here to provide your eyeball(s), with some pretty colours. I don’t get paid as I work this weekend strictly for tips… so, if you like what you see please make a DONATION. If you don’t like it simply reach into the pocket of the person next to you and give me their money. CHALK MASTER.”

A contest called “Canada’s top dog” had its own tent with a professional photographer taking pictures of dogs behind a white screen; the winning photo is to be published on the cover of “Puppy and dog basics” magazine.

Large “Gourmet” dog bones were also served from a cart and table.

Next year’s festival is expected to be bigger and better with even more attractions.
