UK study reveals smoking could shorten men’s lives by 10–15 years

Saturday, September 19, 2009

A study carried out in the United Kingdom revealed that the life expectancy for men could be reduced by 10–15 years after the age of 50 due to smoking.

The British Medical Journal carried out a study over a time period of 38 years in the United Kingdom which examined the health of 19,000 men aged 40–69. They were examined between 1967–1970. After tracing the history of the men, the survey revealed that smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol reduced the life expectancy of men by 10–15 years after they reached the age of 50. The research was published on the BMJ‘s website on Friday.

The researchers from the University of Oxford in England were focussing on smoking, high blood pressure and cholesterol due to the fact that they are the main cardiovascular risk factors. Dr. Robert Clarke from the university said: “We’ve shown that men at age 50 who smoke, have high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels can expect to survive to 74 years of age, while those who have none of these risk factors can expect to live until 83. It is precisely this kind of very prolonged follow-up study that is necessary to get these results — that modest differences in heart risk factors can accurately predict significant differences in life expectancy.”

“The results give people another way of looking at heart disease risk factors that can be understood more readily. If you stop smoking or take measures to deal with high blood pressure or body weight, it will translate into increased life expectancy.”

Know The Person You Are Hiring

Know the Person You Are Hiring

by

Steven Davis

Ever wonder who is in your home working on the heating unit? Did you know that the person changing the oil in your car is a convicted thief? Is your child’s soccer coach a felon? Do you know the driving history of the people driving your company vehicles on the roadways? Who is representing your company?

Surveys show that 40% of applications and resumes submitted are fabricated or misleading in hopes of increasing the applicant’s chances of getting the job. Eighty percent of the information received from personal references is misleading. How do you make a good hiring decision based upon the information you know? Flip a coin. In this article we will provide you with concrete ways to increase the amount of factual information you have available for any applicant in order to make a good hiring decision and increase the likelihood of finding the right person for the job. If implemented correctly, these techniques could decrease your Workers’ Compensation, general liability insurance, and vehicle insurance premiums and increase your reputation in the community. During the application process, require all applicants to provide 3 professional references – not personal references. Personal references tend to be friends, coworkers, and family members who either do not feel comfortable telling the entire truth or have not observed the applicant actually working or know very little about an applicant’s work habits, ethics, etc. I strongly recommend you obtain 3 professional references who have no personal connection to the applicant but can attest to their abilities and employment history. While this will provide a small portion of information you need in total to make a good decision – it will add to whatever else you find out about your potential employee. Next you should require every applicant to interview in person. After 20 minutes of speaking to the applicant face-to-face, you should have a good idea if they are a good fit for your company and the position to be filled. Make sure you ask difficult questions and watch for their response. If possible, give them either a written test or hands-on test. For example, if you are hiring someone that is required to use a computer program like Microsoft Excel, have them complete an exercise on a computer using that program. Be creative. While it may add time to your interview process, view as an investment in your company. I’d rather spend an additional 30 minutes making sure I have the best possible candidate than making a fast decision and hiring a “dud”. After the interview, it’s time to conduct a criminal background check. Believe or not, the majority of companies do no background check at all. They simply accept the word of the applicant concerning their history which is dangerous and it increases the company’s liability dramatically. I’ve been in human resources for over 20 years. I remember 2 brothers that came in together and applied for 2 vacant positions dealing with the public requiring a valid driver license. On paper and in person, they were outstanding candidates and I was ready to hire them both. After I conducted an electronic background check and driver license verification (MVR), I found that both were convicted of felony larceny, safecracking, breaking and entering, and neither had a valid license. Are these people you want representing your company? I would not have known any of this information if I hadn’t checked. We didn’t hire them. Drug screening prior to employment is essential. There are some good laboratories you should be able to find locally that will test your applicants for around $30 – $40 each. It is money well spent. Identifying drug users reduces your liability. Think for a moment what would happen if John is operating one of your vehicles and hits a pedestrian because he likes to smoke marijuana or abuse prescription drugs. That is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Call the professional references we spoke about in the second paragraph. Ask questions that yeild information about how they work, punctuality, trust, need for supervision, and ability to do the work assigned. Listen to what they say about the applicant. Sometimes the best information is what they don’t say. Listen for long pauses as they think how to phrase a response to your question. When you’ve completed the interview, hands-on testing, criminal background check, drug screening, and calling the professional references, you should have a more complete picture of the person applying for your position. You should know if they are right for your organization. Now act. Decide who to hire, contact them and make an offer for employment. You probably are asking yourself “How much does all this cost?” All of this should take about 40 minutes to process which includes interview time. The background check and drug screening should cost anywhere from $50 – $60 for every new hire. I know it seems expensive but you need not spend the money on every applicant – just the one you anticipate hiring. Spending this money upfront is an investment. If you prevent one accident or theft – you’ve profited and your company benefits. Knowing who you hiring: priceless. —— Author’s Note: There are many Federal and State laws governing background checks, drug screening, legal interviewing questions, and providing references. Many of the vendors for background checks and drug screening test know these rules and can assist you greatly. Consult a human resources professional or attorney if you are ever in doubt of being compliant with these various laws. Every company, regardless of size, should follow similar guidelines for screening potential employees.

U.S. Congress reaches deal on payroll tax cut extension

U.S. Congress reaches deal on payroll tax cut extension

Friday, December 23, 2011

Speaker of the U.S. House John Boehner announced yesterday that he would agree to a two-month extension of the payroll tax cut. In an effort to end the impasse between the House and Senate, Boehner told Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid that he would schedule a House vote on the Senate version of the bill that would extend the tax cut, which was due to expire at the end of the year.

Speaker Boehner announced the agreement in a brief statement: “Senator Reid and I have reached an agreement that will ensure taxes do not increase for working families on January 1”. Boehner informed other congressmen of the deal in a conference call yesterday evening.

The House may pass the bill via unanimous consent today, which would not require the presence of all members. Boehner and Reid also agreed to a bipartisan negotiation committee to sort out differences and extend the tax cut for an entire year, a goal recently sought by Republicans in the House.

The extension of the payroll tax cut, which would prevent approximately 160 million Americans from seeing a tax increase in 2012, had already been passed by the Senate last weekend. Earlier yesterday, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell joined several other Republican Senators in encouraging the House to pass the extension.

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid said that once the House acts, he “will be happy to restart the negotiating process to forge a yearlong extension.” At a news conference, Speaker Boehner issued a statement: “We have fought the good fight. Why not do the right thing for the American people even though it’s not exactly what we want.” President Obama also responded to the development in a statement: “This is good news, just in time for the holidays. This is the right thing to do to strengthen our families, grow our economy, and create new jobs. This is real money that will make a real difference in people’s lives.”

The tax cut extension impasse began when the House effectively rejected the Senate-approved version of the bill on Tuesday after being faced with opposition from House Republicans, specifically those associated with the Tea Party movement, who advocated for spending cuts and the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline.

The Difference In Bodybuilding For Women

By Michelle Bery

When we think of bodybuilders, we often automatically think of men with large, sculpted muscles competing for titles. But when it comes to the sport of bodybuilding, women have taken a larger role than ever working to build their own muscles and compete on the same level as the men. Subsequently, bodybuilding for women has become increasingly popular for participants and fans alike.

Bodybuilding is significantly easier for men than it is for women based on one simple fact; the hormone testosterone is responsible for the building of muscle in our bodies. And while both men and women have levels of testosterone in their bodies, men have significantly higher levels. Therefore, the ability to build muscle comes much easier to men. Bodybuilding for women can be more difficult but the results are just as spectacular.

Whether taking on the sport as a hobby or in order to participate in competition, bodybuilding for women can be a terrific way for women to achieve optimum fitness and nutrition. And for a gender that is often held to higher standards for physical appearance, bodybuilding allows women to revel in their physical power as well as their femininity.

Bodybuilding for women just like bodybuilding for men requires a strong commitment to diet and exercise. For most women this means a weekly workout routine that combines cardiovascular exercise, core work, and weight training. But, unfortunately, when it comes to this sport some women, in an effort to increase the levels of testosterone in their body and thus increase their ability to build muscle, will turn to anabolic steroids to enhance their performance. The effects of steroid use can be disastrous on many levels and result in a bevy of physical repercussions including hair loss, acne, muscle weakness, high blood pressure, and, in some cases, the taking on of male physical characteristics.

Another thing to keep in mind when it comes to bodybuilding for women is that intense workouts and dieting will significantly reduce the body fat percentage in a womans body. While this can be beneficial to a certain extent, body fat should ordinarily be kept at balanced levels in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Dangerously low body fat can result in a loss of the menstrual cycle and a number of physical manifestations.

Bodybuilding for women done safely – can result in beautifully sculpted muscles and overall physical health a fantastic reward for hard work and sacrifice.

US adds 173,000 jobs in August; unemployment rate drops to seven year low

US adds 173,000 jobs in August; unemployment rate drops to seven year low
November 1st, 2021 in Uncategorized | No Comments

Monday, September 7, 2015

The US economy added 173,000 jobs in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday. The unemployment rate fell from 5.3 to 5.1 percent, the lowest since April 2008.

Although August job gains were lower than most economists forecast, job growth numbers for June and July were revised upwards by a combined 44,000. Average job gains over the past three months stand at 221,000, compared to March-May’s 189,000 monthly average. Over the past twelve months, job growth has averaged 247,000 per month.

Average hourly earnings rose 0.3 percent, or 8 cents, marking the largest increase in earnings in seven months. Hourly earnings had risen by 6 cents in July. Wages have risen by 2.2 percent over the past year.

Job growth in August was primarily concentrated in the health care and social assistance, financial activities, and professional and business services sectors. Those three areas of the economy added a combined 108,000 jobs. Food service and drinking places employment increased by 26,000 over the month, and other economic sectors saw employment hold steady. Manufacturing, on the other hand, saw employment decline by 17,000 in August. A stronger dollar and worldwide economic weakness make US exports less desirable, leading to a flattening in manufacturing employment so far this year after steadily rising in the early years of the US economic recovery.

The solid overall job gains led analysts to slightly raise expectations for a decision by the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this month. Investors raised the likelihood of a September rate increase from 26 percent before the jobs report to 30 percent, and stocks dropped by over one percent on Friday. “The payrolls data is certainly good enough to allow for a Fed rate hike in September,” said Deutsche Bank’s head of currency strategy, Alan Ruskin. “The big question is still whether financial market volatility will scupper the plans.”

“This is the first time the market has looked at a Fed meeting and really has no idea what the Fed is going to do,” said Mark Kepner, a New Jersey equity trader with Themis Trading. “Right now you’re looking at the overall uncertainty and that’s what’s hanging on the market. I don’t think this number in and of itself changes how somebody’s going to vote.”

Details emerge on how al-Zarqawi’s location was pinned

Details emerge on how al-Zarqawi’s location was pinned
November 1st, 2021 in Uncategorized | No Comments

Friday, June 9, 2006

Someone said to be an informant within Abu Musab al-Zarqawi‘s trusted circle told Coalition forces the insurgent leader was going to have a meeting, it has emerged. This information appears to have led US F-16Cs to a safehouse in the Iraqi town of Hibhid, where the Jordanian and five others, including a child, were killed on Wednesday.

“We had absolutely no doubt whatsoever that Zarqawi was in the house. There was 100 percent confirmation,” Caldwell said.

The informer is said to want the insurgency to pursue a strategy within the Iraqi political process, which in the informer’s view was in contrast to tactics executed by al-Zarqawi’s leadership that involved ethnic killings.

It was one of the last in a long line of breadcrumbs leading the hunt for the Iraqi government’s most-wanted murderer to the doorstep of an attractive isolated house in Hibhid.

In a late-April video al-Zarqawi had been shown spraying bullets from a machine gun with a horizon in the background. This is said to have revealed the general location of al-Zarqawi, found near Diyala province, in the north east of Iraq. The ethnically mixed region had seen an upsurge in violence and over days preceding the airstrike.

Murders had included a number of decapitated heads left in fruitboxes. Al-Zarqawi had been known for kidnapping and video beheadings of westerners in Iraq.

Another al-Zarwaqi insider also had given vital clues to the investigators before the final tip-off. A former customs clearance officer in Rutba identified as Ziad Khalaf al-Karbuli had named Sheikh Abu Abdul-Rahman as al-Zarqawi’s spiritual advisor and gave-up contact details.

Ziad Khalaf al-Karbuli had appeared on Jordanian television, May 23, to confess his links to al-Zarqawi, and to his murder of a Jordanian driver and his kidnap of two Moroccan embassy employees in 2005. The vital clue about Abu Abdul-Rahman was not broadcast.

With details from the al-Karbuli interrogation the gunsights got closer to al-Zarqawi. “Through painstaking intelligence effort, they were able to start tracking him, monitoring his movements and establishing when he was doing his link-ups with Zarqawi, ” Maj. Gen. William Caldwell said of the investigators.

The US search for the Sheikh included the use of remote controlled aircraft, it was revealed.

However; it is said neither the al-Karbuli information nor the al-Zarqawi betrayer lead the Americans to press the fire button on al-Zarwaqi’s two-story home. Al-Zarqawi was hard to catch because he reportedly eschewed trackable cell-phones in favour of high-tech Thuraya-made satellite phones to communicate.

The death certificate was signed by the secret informant who said both Sheikh Abu Abdul-Rahman and al-Zarqawi would be in Hibhid, Wednesday night.

For the elusive insurgent who had previously escaped attempts to bomb him, the execution came after comparison of this source’s information with tracks of the location of satellite phone users.

The location found was beside a property with a courtyard surrounded by fields away from other buildings. It appears then the US command made the decision to strike at an address in the small town, near Baqubah.

US special forces were on the scene to photograph the dead al-Zarqawi at 6:17 p.m., two minutes after two 500lb bombs were dropped. Al-Zarqawi was said to be alive and being given medical assistance when he died of wounds sustained in the bombing.

The announcement of the killing was made Thursday by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said to viewers of Iraqi television the $25 million bounty for information leading to the death or capture of al-Zarqawi would be “honored.”
