Canada confirms fifth case of Mad Cow Disease

Monday, April 17, 2006

Canada‘s Food Inspection Agency has confirmed that a cow in British Columbia, Canada, tested positive for bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or “mad cow disease”. Officials announced on Friday that initial tests done on the purebred six-year-old dairy Holstein had come back inconclusive. The cow was found in Fraser Valley, a farming community near Vancouver, British Columbia.

Officials also say that the beef supply is safe because none of the infected cows had made it to the human food chain. “This finding does not affect the safety of Canadian beef. Tissues in which BSE is known to concentrate in infected animals are removed from all cattle slaughtered in Canada for domestic and international human consumption. No part of this animal entered the human food or animal feed systems,” said agency officials in a statement on Sunday.

“This animal, a six-year-old dairy cow, developed BSE after the implementation of Canada’s feed ban. Investigators will pay particular attention to the feed to which the animal may have been exposed early in its life, when cattle are most susceptible to BSE. The CFIA is collecting records of feed purchased by and used on the animal’s birth farm,” the statement continued.

However, the United States does not believe a ban on Canadian beef will come immediately. “Information gathered through this investigation will help us to determine what, if any, impact this should have on our beef and live cattle trade with Canada. Based on the information currently available, I do not anticipate a change in the status of our trade,” said U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns.

This is Canada’s fifth confirmed case of the disease since May 2003, and officials have tested more than 100,000 cows since the first case of the disease turned up in Alberta. This is the second cow to test positive for the disease this year.

At least 150 people worldwide have died from eating beef contaminated with the variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a nerve disease that is usually fatal. Most of the deaths occurred in the United Kingdom.

Missing dog’s severed head found by 17-year old girl

Thursday, March 15, 2007

A $2,500 reward has been issued by the Humane Society of the United States for information on an “implied terroristic threat”, according to Sergeant Jim Gray of the St. Paul Police Department.

According to Crystal Brown, 17 year old owner of the dog, a gift-wrapped box with a note saying “Congratulations Crystal. This side up. Batteries included.”, was left on her doorstep along with the severed head of her dog, Chevy, and a Valentine’s Day candy.

The dog, an Australian shepherd mix called Chevy, went missing in February and Crystal, his owner, spent weeks searching for him, posting fliers, going door to door, and visiting the local animal shelter.

Dale Bartlett, Deputy Manager for the Humane Society said that “This case was extremely heinous. I deal with hundreds and hundreds of cruelty cases each year. When I read about this case, it just took my breath away.”

“This was so cruel,” Crystal said. “We’re dealing with one sick, twisted person.”

Owner wants $10 million for Flight 93 crash site land

Owner wants $10 million for Flight 93 crash site land

Thursday, June 7, 2007

Mike Svonavec, the owner of the land in Somerset County, Pennsylvania where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed on September 11, 2001 has set a US$10 million price tag for his property, which is sought by the group, Families of Flight 93 and the United States National Park Service for building a memorial dedicated to those on the plane.

Svonavec says that the price is fair market value for the 273 acre property and the organization would not be charged for the exact site of the crash. The organization has offered to buy the land for no more than $500,000 at least three times.

Currently, the U.S. National Park Service only owns approximately 60 acres of the land. PBS Coals Inc. owns 864 acres of the land and Svonavec owns 273 acres. The entire field is nearly 2,000 acres.

The permanent memorial is estimated to cost $58 million and is scheduled to be constructed starting in 2008 or 2009. On the ten-year anniversary of 9/11, a ribbon will be cut at the site.

Svonavec has also placed a box on the crash site temporary memorial, where visitors can leave a “donation” to pay for his asking price for the land as well as the cost of providing security at the site. Funding was provided for the cost of security, but in February the funds were already used up and Svonavec says he can no longer afford to keep the land maintained and secure. Reports say that the security company that is currently in charge of security charges $10,000 per month.

“That land has been paid for with 40 lives…the donation box is an insult to that cost. I think Svonavec believes his land, because it has the blood of my cousin and 39 other people, it’s worth more,” said Patrick White, Vice President, Families of Flight 93.

Renault F1’s team boss, top engineer quit as team accepts cheating claim

Renault F1’s team boss, top engineer quit as team accepts cheating claim

Renault F1 team boss Flavio Briatore and engineering director Pat Symonds have both split ways with the team. The move comes as Renault announce they will not fight a charge of race-fixing.

Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) accused Renault of ordering Nelson Piquet, Jr. to crash during the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix. The wreck brought out the safety car and most other competitors made refueling stops while it was out. However, Renault’s Fernando Alonso had pitted unusually early and was able to move up to take one of just two victories that year.

The FIA interviewed Piquet after an investigation was triggered by claims published by Globo TV. Piquet’s interview was leaked, and he placed the blame squarely on Briatore and Symonds.

“The proposal to deliberately cause an accident was made to me shortly before the race took place, when I was summoned by Mr. Briatore and Mr. Symonds in Mr. Briatore’s office… When I was asked to crash my car I accepted because I hoped it could improve my position within the team at this critical time in the race season,” Piquet said in the interview.

Piquet further stated that he received no assurances he would still be racing for Renault in 2009. Although he continued to race for Renault in 2009, he was sacked midway through the current season.

Renault will discover their punishment at a hearing before the World Motor Sport Council in Paris, France. They face the possibility of being banned from Formula One. Piquet has received immunity from the FIA for his testimony. Data showed Piquet accelerating into the wall instead of braking as he approached it.

Briatore has a long history with Renault. He started off with Benetton Formula in 1988 and was team principal for Michael Schumacher‘s 1994 and 1995 world title wins. He left in 1997 but Renault made him head again after he helped the French firm buy the team in 2000. He was there for Alonso’s world championship wins in 2005 and 2006.

UK manufacturing grows despite a slight slowdown

by

David hurleys

A small growth is seen by the manufacturers of Britain in the month of February. There was a steady recovery of the sector is reducing the need for more stimulus from the central bank because the economy is slowly moving out of the danger zone.

Governor Mervyn King including some policymakers of Bank of England believes that this week played down the likelihood of another cash boost. The news that the sluggish housing market is gaining a touch of momentum bolstered views that injection of February\’s 50 billion pound cash may have been for the last time. The Markit/CIPS Manufacturing Purchasing Managers\’ Index in January ticked down to 51.2 from a slightly downwardly revised 52.0 which was the highest level since May. According to the analysts\’ forecasts the reading fell short for 51.8, but was still above the 50 marks which separate expansion from contraction. Manufacturers are now looking forward on course to help the economy to grow after a 0.8 percent drop in the sector\’s output led to a small overall contraction in the economy of UK. According to construction industry analyst Glenigan, there was also positive news from the smaller construction sector where the value of projects started between December and February rose by 17 percent as compared to a year ago. Glenigan said that he improved construction activity in February was even more decent given the snow and freezing weather early on in the month. British house builders have shown a more optimistic attitude recently after they reported big leaps in profit for 2011. and get the required funds.

In recent years, many builders have grabbed up cheaper lands to push up their margins and have concentrated on selling more houses, rather than cheaper apartments, in areas where house prices have remained resilient. And house prices also rose more than expected in the month of February as per the data from mortgage lender Nationwide showed. House price surveys have also indicated that the sluggish housing market is gaining a touch of momentum. The Office for National Statistics data showed new orders for private housing grew 8.5 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011 as compared to the previous three months. However, the slowdown in manufacturing highlights a bumpy journey ahead. The Bank of Britain views that the recovery is likely to be slow and at risk of setbacks this year.

Media round-up: April Fools’ Day 2008

Tuesday, April 1, 2008

Many media outlets traditionally deliberately spread hoaxes on April Fools’ Day, including notable quality sources such as National Geographic and Science.

The popular British tabloid The Sun wrote that French President Nicolas Sarkozy is to undergo stretch surgery to make him taller than his wife, Italian artist and model Carla Bruni. The report claimed the 5 foot 5 inch leader would be made 5 inches taller in one year using a method by Israeli professor Ura Schmuck. The Sun noted that during his visit to Britain last week, Sarkozy had high-heel shoes while his wife wore a pair of flat pumps.

The Guardian on the other hand ran an article that suggested that Carla would head an initiative by Prime Minister Gordon Brown to bring more glamour, good taste and sophistication to the U.K. general population. This would involve collaboration with Marks & Spencer for high-street fashion and Jamie Oliver for meals and wine.

BBC News had real-looking footage of flying penguins fronted by documentary host Terry Jones, which were actually an advertisement for its new iPlayer.

Chinese authorities say they are preparing to launch a crackdown on melamine-laced milk after the scandal over tainted products, which made hundreds of thousands of children ill two years ago and damaged China’s brand reputation overseas, resurfaced.

China has dispatched inspectors to sixteen provinces to urge local governments to thoroughly investigate cases concerning food safety.

The decision comes after milk products tainted with the industrial chemical melamine were removed from sale in Shanghai and the provinces of Shaanxi, Shandong, Liaoning and Hebei, the state-run Xinhua News Agency said.

Parenting Approaches You Will Want To Put Into Action

May 22nd, 2020 in Finance Specialists | No Comments

Submitted by: Antone Lewars

Effective parenting has a lot to do with trial and error, however, to raise your children the right way you need to do what is best for them. When it comes to discipline, for example, is it best to be strict, permissive or somewhere in between? Being a great parent is definitely possible for you, especially if you implement the strategies we are about to discuss.

Some parents, either deliberately or without thinking about it, practice what is called permissive parenting. Parents who fit this description tend to have kids who run rampant and mostly do as they please. These are the kind of parents who seem to not care if their kids are climbing on store counters or screaming at the top of their lungs in a public place. You might think that kids raised this way would be care free, even if others find it irritating, but this isn’t usually the case. When kids venture outside the home and go to school, meet others and eventually have to find jobs, they find that there are limits and rules everywhere, yet their parents didn’t prepare them for this. Parents who are unable to set boundaries are often trying to be friends to their kids rather than parents, and the fact is kids need actual parents who sometimes say “no” to them.

If your kids do something praiseworthy, don’t forget to acknowledge it. You’re not sending the right message to your kids if you only recognize their shortcomings. Everyone, especially kids, responds to praise, and it helps them want to do well in the future. You want to bolster a child’s self esteem as much as possible, and praise is the best way to do this. You don’t have to exaggerate or make things up, but make sure you notice when your kids do something that’s worthy of praise.

Don’t let yourself feel isolated as a parent, and ask for help when you need it. Your spouse should play an equal role when it comes to making decisions and spending time with children. If you have to, join a local support group, which is especially helpful for single parents; ask family and friends for help when necessary. You may be a great parent, but there will still be times when you’ll require assistance or a helping hand. Make sure you have a system in place so that you can get help or support when you need it. It’s important to be able to admit it when you feel you’re in over your head, so look for help when you need it. Sometimes someone else can offer a fresh point of view and give you a useful suggestion. While there’s no simple rule to govern all situations you face as a parent, it’s good to have some guiding principles. All we can do is approach it to the best of our abilities and ask for help when we need it. You can use ideas such as we’ve presented here to help you, but you have to see what works best with your own kids.
