University of Wales to close down after 120 years

Saturday, October 22, 2011

120 years after it was founded, the University of Wales (UoW) will shut down. Already comprised of several institutions, two will merge fully while two more will become independent universities.

With a charter from 1893 and the Prince of Wales as its chancellor, problems began at UoW last year after concerns the head of a Malaysian partner institution, a local pop artist, had non-legitimate qualifications. This was followed by Thailand’s authorities denouncing another UoW partner as illegal, then an investigation in the UK into all the UoW’s foreign ties.

The Quality Assurance Agency said UoW’s overseas checks on foreign institutions were inadequate. The UK Border Agency is investigating a possible visa scam whereby foreign students were sold exam answers for a qualification leading to UoW entry and British visas. Two colleges — Rayat London College and Lampton College — are suspended over the claims.

Trinity St David and Swansea Metropolitan universities are to merge, forming University of Wales: Trinity St David. It is to use the latter’s own royal charter, which is itself 190 years old. Newport and Glyndwr are set to become universities in their own right. The dissolution follows calls from the leaders of rival universities for the end of UoW.

“I warmly welcome the historic decision taken today by the University of Wales Council,” said UoW Vice-Chancellor Professor Medwin Hughes, who will fill the same role for the new University of Wales: Trinity St David. “The transformed University will serve and deliver for Wales.” His counterpart for Newport, Dr Peter Noyes, said “The inevitable end to the story of the University of Wales should not detract from a distinguished history lasting 12 decades. Wales should be sad that this day has come[.]” UoW chairmain Hugh Thomas has resigned.

The Prince of Wales is among past students, having spent a 1969 term there. The institution’s various member organisations at one point included the now-separate Cardiff University.

Difficult To Understand But Perfect For Use

Then I read it twice and thrice then only I came to know about its meaning. Here is the simplest form for you all who are interested to know about the multiple of this single technical device. This cylinder is not normal cylinder that we use in our kitchen. These hydraulic cylinders are mechanical devices that are used for poignant or for monitoring a system. A hydraulic cylinder gives such forceful stroke with unidirectional strike. It is much powerful cylinder that is not filled with gas but is filled with fluid and is controlled with hydraulic motor. Thus, it is also known as linear hydraulic motor. With the help of Hydraulic fluid this hydraulic cylinder is able to produce under pressure linear motion along with force. These Hydraulic Cylinders are also known as hydraulic Jacks, hydraulic Rams, linear hydraulic actuators and also are famous as hydraulic actuators. In a Hydraulic cylinder, with the help of hydraulic pump energy is produced and when energy is produced these hydraulic cylinders transfigure this energy into a mechanical output to execute the chore. Thus, these cylinders perform are well-known as strongest and inseparable part. i.e muscles for machinery.Fundamentally, these Hydraulic Cylinders are used by big factories and industries whereby big machines bear the load of heavy products because to carry this operation huge power source is needed. Not only in big industries and large scale of factories carry out this process but these cylinders are also brought in every type of heavy gear and heavy automobiles such as its used in the excavators, bull dozers, forklifts and even in elevators its brought in used. You might be surprised to know that these heavy power cylinders used mostly in big industries and big factories can also be brought in our normal day to day life, i.e household chores and domestic applications. Want to know how? Then here it goes for all men and women who spend most of their time in home. It is much safe as other machines and even it carry out assigned task much quicker along with great ease and safety. These Hydraulic Cylinders comes in varying shapes and sizes but performs the task equal to other types of cylindrical machines. Some of these are thin in shape; some are thick and are useful for different types of works. Especially these Hydraulic Cylinders are used by engineers mostly. Go Budding engineers go and try this new machine out for your new work.

US Senate passes new bankruptcy bill

US Senate passes new bankruptcy bill

Saturday, March 12, 2005

In a vote of 74-25 last Thursday, the US Senate passed a measure that would change bankruptcy laws, making it harder for individuals seeking relief from their debt burden to avoid repayment. Almost twenty Democrats joined Republicans, who currently hold a majority of the seats in the US Senate, in passing the bill.

Lobbyists for credit card companies and financial services firms have worked for the bill during the last two administrations. A similar measure passed both the Senate and House during the previous administration, but then President Bill Clinton pocket-vetoed the measure in 2000.

Democrats sought to soften the bill by allowing bankruptcy filers to negotiate directly with lenders for relief, but the amendments were defeated by the Republican-controlled Senate. Proponents of the bill claim the rise of bankruptcy filings to nearly 1.5 million a year shows that abusers of credit use the filings to shield themselves from irresponsible practices.

“There has been an explosion of bankruptcy,” said Iowa Republican Sen. Charles E. Grassley, the bill’s sponsor. “We preserve the principle of a fresh start, but we also establish a principle that if you have the ability to repay some of your debt, you are not going to get off scot-free.” However, Massachusetts Democratic Sen., Edward M. Kennedy said, “This legislation makes the bankruptcy courts of the United States the collection agency for the credit-card industry.”

The bill impacts a broad spectrum of bankruptcy law, but the most significant impact is on personal bankruptcy filings. Individuals who get behind in repaying credit card debt face high interest charges and stiff late payment fees. By only meeting minimum payment requirements, borrowers remit to the lender over the life of the loan an amount in interest and other fees that can far exceed the value of the principal balance of the loan. This can put consumers who run up high balances on various cards at financial risk of default. Critics of the bill blame these aggressive lending practices as a contributing factor in the rising trend of bankruptcy filings from 1996.

The proposed bill doesn’t only affect debtors with credit card debt.

It also affects debtors who have run up large medical bills.

Patients with a past medical history that disqualifies them from full medical coverage, can easily find themselves facing insurmountable medical bills after just a short stay in the hospital. These individuals will no longer be able to get a fresh start after these personal disasters, and will be forced to live in poverty until they can pay off their medical bills as part of their Chapter 13 filing. (Prior to this bill, they would have been able to file Chapter 7, completely discharging their debt.)

Chapter 7, which accounts for 70% of bankruptcy filings, allows individuals to eliminate most non-secured debts after liquidating assets, with the notable exemption of one’s principle residence in most states. The Senate passed bill would change Chapter 7 eligibility by applying a means-test, where those with a median income higher than the state average would be required to file under Chapter 13 provisions. Under Chapter 13 protection, an individual’s debt is not forgiven; rather it is restructured for payment under more lenient terms.

This was the first major overhaul of federal bankruptcy law in many years.

Under the old bankruptcy law, a personal bankruptcy attorney could not be held financially responsible for his clients mendacity. Under the new bankruptcy law, the bankruptcy attorney is responsible for his client’s lies to the Court about his assets and the bankruptcy attorney and his insurance carrier can be held responsible by the Bankruptcy Court.

The result is that personal bankruptcy attorneys (this does not apply to corporate bankruptcy attorneys) are likely to flee the personal bankruptcy field when the new law takes effect. Their insurance companies will not offer the sort of coverage that they would need to continue to practice.

So when consumers need to file personal bankruptcy under the new law, they will be unlikely to find a bankruptcy attorney to represent them. Consumers will have to file pro se: such consumers will be likely to fail due to the complexity of the law.

The bottom line is that the field of personal bankruptcy law as a practice area of law will cease to exist when the new bankruptcy law takes effect, and consumers will be unable to secure legal counsel and so consumers will lose what legal protections counsel now affords them.

Under the new bankruptcy law about one half million Americans will be forest to pay for at lest 5 years on longer they will be held in servitude as chattel they will be completely subservient to a dominating influence of the company that holds the loan. Their loan will be put on the market for sale for profit. The people will be forced to work harder. People who fail to go to court will have a arrest warrant made out in their name and people who refuseto pay. They will be subject to fines and or jail. About fifty thousand Americans will punished by a fine and or about three thousand Americans every year will go to jail under the new bankruptcy law. For some people this will be a third strike they will be put in jail for life.

The bill has the support of President Bush, and its passage in the House sometime next month seems likely. If enacted into law, lending companies will recover more money on what otherwise would be written off as bad loans. Those persons of median and higher income seeking relief would be required to file under Chapter 13 status and pay up to $100 per month under court imposed conditions. It is expected the proposed changes would cause a sharp increase in filings before the new law could take effect.

Insurance For Your New House

By Alston Ballkcom

When you have just purchased a new house, insurance is probably not what you have in the forefront of your mind. This is to be expected. You may need to get your kids into new schools. You have contracts to understand and sign. You need to find a grocery store. There are plenty of things to think about when buying a new home.

Insurance is a boring but important subject. We tend to think about insurance only when we really need it, which can be a mistake. Knowing a little about the way insurance works can save you a lot of headaches when it comes time to purchase a plan or file a claim.

To a homeowners insurance company all of us are just a bunch of statistics. They make decisions based on numbers and tables. This is all that matters when calculating your rate. The information they have about you such as your job and where your home is located come into play when a company provides a quote for you.

Before asking for a quote from any insurance broker, you really should know the value of your residence, and that means the replacement cost, not just what the bank appraised it for during the financing process. A home builder in your area may be the best source for this type of valuable information. Knowing this figure will help you begin the process.

Shopping for insurance is like any other service you may need. It can pay to shop around because premiums from companies will vary. Also, shopping by the lowest price alone, while tempting, may be a mistake. For instance, some companies may have a poor track record when it comes to paying claims. A few minutes of basic research can keep you from making a poor decision based solely on price.

New home insurance is something the bank will require you to have, but their only concern is that you have enough coverage to protect them for the amount of the loan. Remember that a basic contract may not even cover the replacement cost for your house. Even though it may be boring and complicated, it will be in your best interest to read all your insurance documents carefully to be sure you have enough coverage should disaster strike.

Home insurance contracts protect you in many ways, such as from damage due to falling trees, or even if pipes burst and you incur damage. Another coverage, called liability, can protect you if you accidentally hurt someone. Speak to your house insurance broker if you have any questions regarding coverage amounts and types of insurance you might need.

Although a homeowners insurance is a robust contract, not everything is covered. However you can personalize your coverage to cover jewelry and other items. Ask your broker about riders you can add to your policy.

New home insurance can be difficult to understand. Just take your time and make sure that you understand your options this way you can make the right choice.

Wikinews interviews candidate for Cleveland mayor Arthur Kostendt

Monday, June 14, 2021

Arthur Oliver Kostendt, a candidate running in the mayoral election of the US city of Cleveland, Ohio set to take place November 2, discussed his campaign and policies with Wikinews this spring.

According to Cleveland Scene, 29-year-old Kostendt is a member of the Cuyahoga County, Ohio Republican Party but has referred to his campaign as “casual”. According to his web site’s personal biography, he was a cadet for the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), scout platoon leader for the 2nd Squadron of the 107th Cavalry Regiment of the Ohio Army National Guard and logistics officer for the 1st Battalion of the 145th Armored Regiment. He served in Kuwait, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia and assisted coalition force detachments in Southeast Asia.

Kostendt is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and summa cum laude graduate of Cleveland State University. He writes he uses an apostrophe to abbreviate his middle name as “Arthur O’Kostendt” instead of the customary period after the O to emphasise his Irish heritage.

A poll published May 5 by Baldwin Wallace University, which does not feature Mr Kostendt, has Dennis Kucinich and Basheer Jones leading in the mayoral race by 17.8 and 13.3 points, respectively, with a margin of error of up to five per cent either way. 48% of those surveyed were undecided. Incumbent mayor Frank G. Jackson, who won the 2017 Cleveland mayoral election with 59% of the vote, is eligible for a fifth term but announced on May 6 he would retire.

London Tube bombs went ‘bang bang bang, very close together’

London Tube bombs went ‘bang bang bang, very close together’
June 6th, 2022 in Uncategorized | No Comments

Saturday, July 9, 2005

After a press conference in London from the Metropolitan Police and Transport for London, more details are emerging about the attacks in London on Thursday.

Data from the Underground system’s power and control systems have revealed that all three bombs went off within 50 seconds of each other, at 8.50am, with the managing director of Transport for London, Tim O’Toole saying the bombs went “bang bang bang, very close together”.

The first bomb to detonate was on the Liverpool Street train soon after it left for Aldgate on the Circle line, seconds before the others. The blast tripped out the power system, visible in the control room. The first call the police received that morning reported “a bang” at Aldgate East, coming within a minute of the blast.

The Edgware Road train, leaving for Paddington and also on the Circle, exploded opposite a train coming from the other direction, making people think at first that it was a derailment. The first call to the Police spoke not of an explosion, but of a person falling under the wheels of the train. The confirmation of a bomb did not come until 9.17am, but by that time the emergency services were already on scene.

Transport for London’s new TrackerNet software is fully opertational on the Circle line, which allows for precise tracking of trains, but is not yet fully installed on the Piccadilly line. The first indication of the Piccadilly line bomb was when the tunnel telephone system wires were cut by the blast, an event logged by other software. The cutting of the lines then tripped out the track current. The tunnel itself suffered only slight damage and is safe, but the train – which was packed with commuters heading for Russell Square – is very badly damaged.

London Underground declared a ‘code Amber’ within minutes, moving trains to platforms and opening all doors. A ‘code Red’ – full evacuation – was set at around 9.15am. O’Toole described the decision to evacuate as being “very grave, not taken lightly”. When questioned as to whether everything possible had been done on the day to save lives, the managing director of Transport for London was “very proud” of the choices made that morning.

As investigations continue, all bodies have been removed from the sub-surface Circle line trains, but the carriages themselves are still in situ while a painstaking forensic investigation takes place.

Currently, work is on-going to retrieve bodies and forensic evidence from the carriage of the train in the deep tunnel of the Piccadilly line near King’s Cross. Teams of rescue workers looking for human remains are working alongside forensics experts in a “meticulous” search to find evidence.

Conditions are described as being very difficult, with high temperatures and lots of dust. Work was halted over Friday night when conditions became too bad, and resumed this morning. Efforts have been made to improve the ventilation.

Work will continue throughout tonight and possibly into Sunday. The exact number of bodies still in the wrecked carriage is unknown.

Access from King’s Cross is impossible, so workers are taking the longer route from Russell Square station to get to the front of the train.

Police have revealed that the bombs were ‘high explosives’ – not homemade. However they are declining to be specific about their composition as the information could be useful when they interrogate suspects.

Police will not confirm or deny if any parts of a timer have been found, but have said that “any device will now be in a million pieces”. Police believe the use of timers more likely than suicide bombings as the blasts were so closely timed, but are not ruling out anything.

Gene mutation produces autism-like traits in mice

Gene mutation produces autism-like traits in mice
June 6th, 2022 in Uncategorized | No Comments

Wednesday, March 23, 2011

By causing the mutation of one specific gene, researchers have produced mice with two frequently encountered behavioral traits of persons diagnosed with autism. Autism commonly affects the ability to interact socially and is associated with repetitive behavior. The finding was reported in the March 20 online edition of Nature.

Using mice, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Duke University mutated one of the genes associated with autism, known as shank3, a gene that controls the production of the shank3 protein present in the brain. Mice that were given this mutation exhibited repetitive behavior and avoided social interactions with the mice around them.

According to MIT Professor Guoping Feng: “Our study demonstrated that Shank3 mutation in mice lead to defects in neuron-neuron communications.”

Shank3 protein are found in synapses within the brain. Synapses allow brain cells (called neurons) to communicate with each other. The mutation in the mouse gene interfered with this communication, apparently producing the subsequent autism-like traits. Researchers believe their work demonstrates the important role of shank3 in the functioning of brain circuits that determine behavior.

While hundreds of genes have been linked to autism in human patients, only a small percentage have been linked to shank3. Professor Feng hypothesizes that disruptions of other genes that act on the production of brain proteins affecting synaptic communication may also be related to autistic behavior. If this disruption is real, Feng claims that treatments could be developed to correct synaptic function for any defective synaptic protein in an autistic patient.

Feng continued; “These findings and the mouse model now allow us to figure out the precise neural circuit defects responsible for these abnormal behaviours, which could lead to novel strategies and targets for developing treatment.”

About one in 110 children in the U.S., and at least one in 100 in UK, have been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, for which there is currently no effective cure.

Massage Stones &Amp; Therapies

June 4th, 2022 in Massage Therapy | No Comments

Submitted by: Sara Ryan

A stone massage is a general technique through which you manually treat muscles and tissues in such a way that they release tension and spasms from within them, with an awfully relaxing result in the end. The specific stones used for these soothing massages may be hot or cold depending on the kind of massage you are willing to get. The excessive sternness of the stone permits a female massage therapist to work on key points with a considerably deep pressure.

Basalt stone is one of the stones used for massage therapies and is dark in color. Its dark color allows it to get hot very fast and at the same time retain the warmth inside it for a pretty long period of time. The Basalt stone has a good magnetic strength and is made up of a higher ratio of iron. On the other hand gray stones have a well defined ratio of holding heat within them which makes them safer to use rather than the darker stones, darker stones are sometime difficult to handle as they may burn the skin because of their heat capacity. Therefore it is compulsory to use a variety of stones during a massage session to ensure the safety of the client.

There are many different techniques through which these stones are applied in a massage session and there main cause being is to transmit the heat held in the stone to the client s body muscles and tissues. A towel is wrapped around the waist of a client and these stones are placed on top of the key points where they have their utmost affect. Usually these stones are placed along side the spinal chord or the chakra points and the massager shall continuously keep massaging the client with more stones held in his palms. Massaging points include: muscles of arms, torso areas and parts of the legs.

The main cause of a stone massage is to relax the muscles of the client in a very comfortable way and not just to swipe stones against his body. Stone massage pressure entirely depends on the client s requirements and may be soft or hard, shallow or a deep thrust.

Heat that is released from the stone into the body of the client has vast effects, it helps improving the body circulation and allows the muscles to calm down, it also lets the body produce more oxygen and circulate nutrients around the tissue areas. Most stone massages take away a lot of the mental stress and put the client into a sedative kind of sleep after the massage is over.

Stones are just another transmitter of heat and represent the massager and his or her personality for the techniques he uses. Hence it is the massager who shall be responsible for using the best stones possible in any of his massages and make sure that he uses good affective massage practices that allow his client to benefit and experience the real feeling of a stone massage.

Google releases test of mapping service
June 4th, 2022 in Uncategorized | No Comments

Thursday, February 10, 2005Google Inc. on Tuesday rolled out a test version of its mapping service — a type of service long offered by its rivals Yahoo and Microsoft. The web site, http://maps.google.com, is designed to let users display maps of locations around the United States and Canada, find businesses near those locations, and generate driving directions between locations.

Unlike the competitors’ offerings, Google’s mapping system shows bigger maps and does not require a reload of the web page when a user pans or zooms the map. The site uses the Google Local search to incorporate local businesses onto the map. Google uses mapping data from TeleAtlas and Navteq, according to information shown on the mapping site.
