World stocks plunge on fears on US recession

World stocks plunge on fears on US recession

Monday, January 21, 2008

Stock prices dropped sharply in Europe and Asia Monday, with fears of economic problems in the United States causing some of the biggest single-day losses in recent years.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index fell 5.5 percent – its biggest fall since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Losses of between three and seven percent were recorded in India, China, Britain, France, Germany and Canada.

While there are many factors linking national economies, analysts blame recent losses on fears of a recession in the United States.

The United States is the main export market for many overseas businesses. Foreign investors also have bought large stakes in U.S. companies.

When American home loan companies began reporting large numbers of defaulting loans in late 2007, the losses spread to other financial institutions, tightening credit markets and sparking worries about Americans’ high levels of debt.

Last week, President Bush proposed a $145 billion stimulus plan to encourage more consumer spending. But analysts say the measure may not be able to prevent a recession – defined as a broad decline in a nation’s economy over a period of at least six months.

U.S. markets are closed on Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a national holiday, but stock futures trading indicates further losses are expected when markets reopen Tuesday.

Top Three Tips On How To Sell Guitars In Chicago

byAlma Abell

Guitars are incredibly versatile instruments, but not every guitar is right for every person or every type of music. Some musicians may find that the guitars they have are ill suited to their developing style, indicating that an upgrade or switch is in order. While shopping around for a new instrument can be a lot of fun, it can often be a bit harder to unload the one you are no longer playing. Here are the top three tips on how to sell guitars in Chicago.

Consider A Third-Party Reseller

Selling you own belongings can be incredibly time consuming and difficult. Some people find it hard to get a fair price, or to reach an audience interested in their items. When it comes to selling guitars, it’s a good idea to think about using a third party vendor. Pawn shops, brokers, and even gold and coin resellers will often buy and sell used guitars. They’re a great resource, as you can still get a fair price for your used guitar without the hassle of finding a buyer on your own.

Invest In New Strings

Before you bring your guitar to a potential buyer, invest in a new set of strings. Keep the guitar tuned as well. This will showcase the best part of the instrument, its sound, to the prospective buyer. Old strings, or an out of tuned instrument simply won’t have the same impressive nature to it, even if all other aspects are considered equal. It’s well worth the small investment in new strings to obtain a higher value for the instrument overall.

Get An Appraisal

Before you sell your guitar, it’s a good idea to have it appraised first. If you are thinking about using a third party vendor, you may be able to have it appraised and sold at the same location. While an appraisal isn’t the same thing as the value you are guaranteed to get for the instrument, it can give you a good idea the overall cost of the guitar, helping figure out a fair price.

Wikinews interviews Democratic candidate for the Texas 6th congressional district special election Daryl Eddings, Sr’s campaign manager

Tuesday, April 20, 2021

Wikinews extended invitations by e-mail on March 23 to multiple candidates running in the Texas’ 6th congressional district special election of May 1 to fill a vacancy left upon the death of Republican congressman Ron Wright. Of them, the office of Democrat Daryl Eddings, Sr. agreed to answer some questions by phone March 30 about their campaigns and policies. The following is the interview with Ms Chatham on behalf of Mr Eddings, Sr.

Eddings is a federal law enforcement officer and senior non-commissioned officer in the US military. His experience as operations officer of an aviation unit in the California National Guard includes working in Los Angeles to control riots sparked by the O. J. Simpson murder case and the police handling of Rodney King, working with drug interdiction teams in Panama and Central America and fighting in the Middle East. He is the founder of Operation Battle Buddy, which has under his leadership kept in touch with over 20 thousand veterans and their families. He was born in California, but moved to Midlothian, Texas. He endeavours to bring “good government, not no government”. Campaign manager Faith Chatham spoke to Wikinews on matters ranging from healthcare to housing.

An Inside Elections poll published on March 18 shows Republican candidate Susan Wright, the widow of Ron Wright, is ahead by 21% followed by Democrat Jana Sanchez with 17% and Republican Jake Ellzey with 8% with a 4.6% margin of error among 450 likely voters. The district is considered “lean Republican” by Inside Elections and voted 51% in favour of Donald Trump in last year’s US presidential election. This is down from 54% for Trump in 2016’s presidential election, the same poll stated.

The French Space Agency will publish its UFO archive online by late January or mid-February. Most of the 6,000 reports have been filed by the public and airline professionals. Jacques Arnould, an official for the French Space Agency, said that the data had accumulated over a 30 year period and that they were often reported to the Gendarmerie.

Often they are made to the Gendarmerie, which provides an official witness statement … and some come from airline pilots – Jacques Arnould

A former mailman who proposed to paint the town hall pink, turn the local town square into a nudist pool, and to plant a marijuana field in the local park has been elected to the Reus, Spain town council.

Ariel Santamaria promised to show up to the town’s council meetings dressed up as Elvis Presley if he was elected and kept his word at the town’s first meeting on Thursday.

Before being elected, Santamaria who is a member of the Reus Independent Coordination, had also promised the town’s 100,000 residents that he would install a GPS system at the police department that would allow officers to track people who are smoking marijuana and provide them with a light if they need one.

An unnamed media consultant who works for Santamaria set up a website for his campaign and followed Santamaria wherever he went, dressed as a pirate.
